First I was more wanting to black out the igloo cooler look. Sound deadening was more of a bonus than the goal. Even though I had the factory headliner inserts front and back. The white border bugged me.
I found this boom mat spray from dei. Lots of good reviews. Says on the can it’s solid to 300 degrees. So should be just fine in the sun inside my black truck.

wiped it all clean with alcohol.
masked off everything .
lesson learned- masking the bottom of the front latches caused a white spot so I had to touch that up after taking the tape off. Also taping off the guide pins next to those latches is not necessary. DEFINITELY mask off the bolt holes for the latches!

number and take a pic of the latches. They are oriented

I put down a layer of flat black spray first.

That one can pictured above was just barely enough to do both panels. I’d buy two cans.

I’d say it came out pretty awesome. This is ONE COAT OF BOOM MAT on top of the black flat I sprayed.
I did touch up a few spots with the flat paint when I was done.
🔥6 hour dry time!🔥
So they’re sitting in My kitchen til dry lol

Nice work! Let us know if you think it makes a difference. Are you planning more than one coat?

Curious as to why you went black vs another lighter color which may not hold as much heat in the summertime

Maybe for the same reason that 80% of new vehicles sold have a black interior. Whatever that reason is.
Black hides stains and looks pretty. 80% of new vehicles have a little better insulation than a toaster on wheels with a seven slot grille.

Sigh. I miss the colorful interiors of the vehicles from yesteryear. My parents had cars with red interiors, blue interiors and green interiors. Roads today are awash with 90% white, black, and grey exteriors all with interiors ranging from drywall grey to black. At least Jeep offers some fun exterior colors. I had to spend a lot of time and $$ changing my Mojave interior to brown and sarge green.

only if i want to deaden roof noise any further.

The roof is already black. I use a windshield sunscreen, and will be tinting soon(finally got the NEw York exemption in the mail). Temps inside have yet to be too hot to cool off within seconds of opening the windows and driving a bit, or using the AC. Most of the interior is black/ very dark grey. A layer of insulation inside the roof isnt absorbing heat from light, only the radiant heat inside. Black absorbs heat from light, not from a radiant source. (example, a white oven wont be any more hot than a black oven would be). SO in that sense, interior color makes no difference. further, black seats and steering wheels get hot because of the light. Try a sunshade or even put a towel over your steering wheel. It will be WAYYYY cooler because of the light not hitting it.

not a bit. I painted them outside, they dri d outside for about two hours then sat in my kitchen for a few hours. I just put them on the jeep about 10 mins ago. They were dry enough to handle. I wouldn’t put them in right away. The might drip or dry improperly. Dry time is listed as 6 hours. Mine sat for 5 before I put them in. They were tacky in spots but definitely dry enough to handle without leaving fingerprints in the paint.

There was a slight smell this morning. Nothing worse than the new car smell. Drove with windows down and popped in a little tree. lol.
Overall I’m quite happy with the results. Haven’t tested any wind noise above 45 yet. It is quiet driving below 45 though.
problem is now I gotta do the back lol.

I haven't bought the headliners yet but I'd like to do this before I do. I wonder how much of a difference the boom mat alone would make. Did you consider doing the entire top? In my head I think the white in the back would now look even worse/ seem even more out of place now that the freedom panels are black?

I have the complete Factory headliner in the back so I can’t see the white except for a few spots above the roll bar. I am eventually going to do the back, but I need to set aside a whole day to take off mask, spray and put it back on.
Not to mention, I would bet that the back will require at least three cans of the stuff one can barely did the two freedom panels.
Also, if you do not have the headliner installed already, you should mask off a small section like you see in my pictures where the Velcro is because that’s how you install those and that Velcro is to be secure. You won’t be able to secure the boom spray.

How are those cases (Maxpedition?) mounted to the tops?

molle panel. I got it off Amazon, but it’s a bit wonky to install. You have to really push the freedom panel mounts down with a pry bar or long screwdriver to get them to seat properly.
