I’m looking for recommendations for a bed rack and rooftop tent RTT.

I’ve been looking at the Rough Country bed rack because their rooftop tent really seems nice and something I’d really enjoy, but I’ve heard recently that the quality is low from them, and they’re considered “cheap”. What brands are reputable and what rooftop tents would you recommend?

There are a lot of threads about rooftop tents. Look in the Overlanding and Camping section. Determine how much you are willing to spend, and then start your research on what to buy. The better the experience you are seeking, the more it is going to cost.

Save yourself a bunch of $$ and go with a tent from Naturnest... same roof top tents as the other brands but without the crazy mark-up. I've been very satisfied with my Sirius 2 RTT from them and it doesn't look like all the others out there.

What we Run: For the Rack: Max Modular by Voodoo.. Aluminum 52 lbs Tent is Roam Adventurer Vagabond XL 190 lbs.. Also I run 1000lb AirLift bags just to keep the Mojave Level when loaded so I don't have headlight Aim issues.

I love my Overland RuffRax rack - Sam the owner is a vet and its 100% made in the USA. Mine integrates with the RollnLock tonneau cover and keeps all my gear dry and dust free. I have the TuffStuff overland Alpha II tent which I also love. Lots of great choices in RTT out there - definitely would recommend a hard shell over soft shell. Lots of youtube reviews on the various makes of tents out there to help you narrow down your search.

My number one piece of advice for a RTT is to look for one used on FB Marketplace. I had to drive 2 hours to buy this one but saved $2,000 off new. Have fun!

I would be remiss if I didn't put in a plug for the ARS Bakpak. It pairs nicely with some of the smaller tents like the Roof Space 2 or ikamper mini and it keeps the height low for better aerodynamics.

I have had every type of Rooftop tent from the beginning of rooftop tents. The packout.com rooftop camper tent is a game changer and well worth the money.

Our biggest advice is to determine which tent you plan on going with first before deciding which rack you want to purchase. Full height racks are great with wedge style tents like the Outland Motorworks Cattywampus, Intrepid, Inspired Overland, Roofnest Falcon, Bushwakka etc, while mid height racks are great for side opening tents, hard or soft shell, like the Ikamper, OM Bonny, Colorado 4x4 Alito, 23Zero Armadillo, etc. For ease of setup and teardown, and durability I highly recommend hard shell tents, but if cost is a factor soft shells are great too.

There's a ton of rack manufacturers out there, we'd love for you to consider our racks once you've determined what type of tent you plan to purchase. We have a lot of happy Gladiator customers! Our racks all made in and around Pittsburgh, USA and work with tonneau covers while still maintaining functionality, they are height adjustable in 2in increments, and made from premium materials like 304 Stainless steel and 5052 Aluminum. most tents are built by the same factories, so there's not a huge difference. What you end up paying for is marketing & warranty.

So I went with the max modular and the Vagabond XL because of your recommendation but I have a question. The recommended minimum crossbar distance for the XL is 68” and the Max Modular only has a 45” from outside to outside. Have you had any issues with having less space than the recommended?

No issues on that point. We have
MAX Modular GLADIATOR MAX bolt together Bed Rack. Works with all Gladiator's from 2019 and up.

I’d definitely recommend the Roof Space 2 RTT. They accounted for every single detail in this thing. Very spacious, great materials, sleek, waterproof, comes with a comfy moisture resistant mattress….the list goes on.

It’s the first fusion category RTT. Literally you can set it up in under an minute, open it with one finger, and put it away again in under 3 minutes if that doesn’t tell you something about it’s easy of use idk what does!
