Brake rotor dust guard (?) bent scraping against rotor

I had new gears installed this week, and while driving home there was a terrible squealing noise from the rear which we determined to be the braking system. Called the shop, and the owner drove two hours down to my house, and said that when they re-installed the brake calipers they must have bent the dust guard (?), a shield that protects the rotor. He said he bent it back into place and all was fine for a few miles and now it’s back to the loud squealing again, especially on right hand curves (which I don’t understand). I’m thinking the metal may be weakend from the bending, and maybe I should just replace these guards. Problem is, I have no idea what they’re really called so I don’t know how to order them. I’ve been looking for parts diagrams but haven’t been able to find any. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

thank you for the reply. I’m not sure that’s it. It doesn’t look like that brake shoe shown in that diagram. It’s more like a flat piece of thin metal. I’ll have to take a picture when I pull the wheels off tomorrow. Thank you for the contact info for Benny.

Yes, that's part of the parking brake assembly. Holds the shoes in place, the drum is the interior section of the rotor.

If it looks like the brake shield isn’t contacting the rotor but you still hear a noise, then I agree with @kevman65 it’s some other part of it rubbing that you just can’t see.
The inside of my assembly was rubbing after my FIRST time losing a caliper bolt.
I have a few pics of this if you search me.

Yikes! Thanks for the reply. I hope my shop didn’t mess up that badly. I still can’t imagine what they did when they had my wheels off.

I’m guessing your rotor will be fine, those things are pretty beefy. Mine was, and I couldn’t believe it based on the whole caliper jamming/breaking my wheel.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something off with the whole brake shield/parking brake assembly since the sheet metal that’s all mounted to is pretty flimsy.

Thankfully most brake stuff is pretty inexpensive to do. I wouldn’t panic. If you still like the shop that did the gears, they’d probably fix it for you with an apology.

I really like the owner of the shop, but not the guy who actually worked on my JT. When I first questioned him about the screeching he told me that he didn‘t do anything to the brakes. When I asked why there were S hooks hanging in the wheel wells when I picked up my vehicle he told me he used them for brake hangers.
He obviously didn‘t want to take responsibility for maybe messing something up. I’m not panicked; there are lots of great Jeep mechanics within a 3 hour hour radius of where I live, but I’m not thrilled that I may have to spend potentially hundreds of dollars to fix whatever he did. And I was hoping to take my JT on a trip in a few weeks but now my break-in period is delayed.

Frustrating. Sorry that happened. Clearly they took the brakes apart and something didn’t go back together correctly. I’m sure you’ll get it worked out before the trip.
