I assume the sensor is a simple conductive sensor. And since distilled water has no dissolved minerals, the sensor can't conduct a charge thought it.

The washer fluid level sensor is a two pin conductive switch. I would imagine there would be enough residual of older washer fluid that it would take a handful of drain/fills of distilled water before it would be pure enough for the level sensor to not work.

If you want to be a cheap charlie, you could use distilled water and get washer fluid tablets off Amazon for cheap and have some resemblance of a cleaning fluid. That is what I do and use during the non-freezing months.

Distilled water is not enough, you need some sort of chemical or detergent to help get the residue off the glass. I use a 50/50 mix of the blue stuff and Distilled water.
