That is kinda my perception, kinda. What I like to hope for are menial jobs get shipped overseas and Americans would concentrate it's labor force on skilled labor jobs. Of course, that goes back on education.
So in your version of utopia, low-skill jobs go overseas and americans only do high-skill jobs? So roughly 300 million people in the US....say half of that in prime working age....150 million high skill jobs? Who's gonna dig the ditches and build roads? Who's gonna flip burgers and cut grass? I don't think my yard will get cut from a call center in India.

That's the dumb mindless response of someone that lives in a fantasy world.

Also...it's "you're"
Dude, come on. That's not necessary. That's the kind of stuff that gets these threads locked.

As for the German scientists-- @Scott L was right. They came here because it was a better, safer opportunity than going to the Soviet Union. Operation Paperclip moved 1500+ Germans here and thanks to a few of them, there's American and not Soviet flags on the Moon.

Now, back to education:

The biggest issue of education system in this country is that the educational industrial complex is a leviathan. And it's big business. And worse yet- in large part because of its endless bureaucratic wrangling and the money being thrown around, nobody is willing to change anything for fear of upsetting the gravy train, even if it's a net positive.

Case in point: I and my trade organization have lobbied the local and state govt of Maryland for years to require a financial literacy course requirement for high school graduates. I was on a task force all last year for this very issue. And multiple state delegates and senators have proposed legislation for years to the same effect. And it never goes anywhere.

Keep in mind that people of all sides agree that we have a debt issue in this country and people do not understand how to work their finances properly to their advantage. Yet that never translates into good legislation.

Reasons why it never goes anywhere:

--The state teacher's union (MSEA) says they're not teaching anything that isn't part of their existing collective bargaining agreement on school time and (rightfully) will not work after hours to teach the class.

--The state board of education is not willing to make a requirement state-wide because they cannot figure out how to work it into the curriculum that is already established. They are not willing to dictate from on high the specific courses that the local boards teach.

--The general assembly will not allow the bills to get out of committees because the teacher's union is against it, and is a massive donor collectively to their campaigns (and party. We are a de facto single-party state). Politicians will not ever bite the hand that feeds, so the MSEA gets its way.

--Other Special interest groups are against teaching about debt and credit (part of most of these types of classes) because their religion says all debt is usury have too much influence. (I was shocked when a delegate told me that last year. I had absolutely no idea the lobbying this group did behind the scenes to achieve their goal)

Ultimately with all these special interest groups and bureaucratic wrangling, the kids get harmed by not learning a valuable skill and we as a community get more graduates annually that can't balance a check book let alone save for a car or mortgage.

Hell, we don't even teach civics anymore and wonder why Americans don't know squat about how the government operates let alone understand the the Constitution or the difference between a democratically elected federal republic and a democracy.

You're right, I apologize.

I have strong feelings against "if you don't like it then leave". No, I will not leave. I don't have to accept things I feel and/or know are wrong. I have a voice and a vote and I will not have anyone tell me to leave my country.

A lot of those "menial" jobs have already been exported overseas and across the border. As the cost of labor increase, the trend will only continue. Now we have AI and automation/robotics to contend with. Those jobs will shrink even faster. This is just facts. There's already a fully automated Mcdonald that, yes, flip bugers and even serve you through the drive through window. Last weekend, on our back from camping out by Joshua NP, we stopped by a Carl's Jr drive through that had an AI system taking our order through the speaker system. If my Roomba can map out my house for vacuuming, im sure theyll be automatic mowers. Self driving taxis is an actual thing now, right now. Sure, it won't be 100%, nothing ever is, but that job market will shrink drastically. If youre not prepared for it, then you'll be left out in the cold. As a nation we need to start thinking about this.

I don't feel like any of my 4 years was a waste. The general education and pre-requisites are actually important for people functioning in the real world. The European system just teaches some of those classes in high school, which we also do here if the kids sign up for them.
I'm also taking in the current cost of a 4 year university currently. It's far from being affordable for most families. Most have to take a loan. Then you add that to post grad cost or med/dental etc. Couple all that with interest and that's overwhelmingly high.

I don't disagree at all but that doesn't answer the question - what are all the low-skill people gonna do? Some people are just low-skill. So what are we gonna do with them?

Wernher von Braun's past, um, employer got him a unique deal to come here to make rockets. In the sense that working for NASA is better than being tried for that past yes, he did come here for
"the best opportunities" šŸ˜…

Seriously though, this thread has been a really good read and I think could serve as a good example, more broadly, of how folks of all different persuasions can discuss something and maybe come to a solution.

Kudos!

The nihilism and negativity in some comments here is amazing to me. Maybe it’s cause I’m older. I grew up in a time when there wasn’t anything we couldn’t do as a nation if we put our minds to it. Hell we went to the moon we’ve taken a super computer from twenty or thirty years ago and put it in our pocket. Once the boot of government is removed from the American people’s necks there is no stopping our ingenuity and spirit. We’ve been misled for generations about America and her greatness. Folks need to go back to their High school civics teachers and demand a refund.
I’m probably not as old as you….. I can relate (and agree).

I honestly believe … The invention of Social Media was the root cause of the decline over the generations. But that’s a whole different topicā€¦ā€¦šŸ™„

Same thing we do with all the people on "disability". Pay them to not work.

Obviously I don't have an answer for this. But's what our other option? Throw our hands up or do what we can to mitigate the damage. Ultimately though, there will those that are left behind, just like now and always. So yes, utopia is just a fantasy. If you haven't seen it yet, watch 'Two American Families' on pbs. It's gut wrenching.

I think we’ve all lost sight of what this country is supposed to be…. or USED to be.

ā€œIf you don’t like it here, you can leave?ā€ means different things to different people (when its SAID TO YOU or when you SAY IT TO SOMEONE)

Sure….none of us can agree on how this country should be operated…. That’s not the point. The point is….. We should ALL HAVE PRIDE for being FREE Citizens. We should all be PROUD of our Serviceman and Servicewoman who put their lives on the line to keep us FREE. For all those Veterans who busted their asses for us…who lost their lives for us. The sacrifices they make……for us.

So yes… Everyone has a voice and a vote….. Before any of us feels the need to complain about this country -Take a moment to think …..about those who are sacrificing their lives….who are eating crappy miliary type food while the rest of us are having a cold beer and filet mignon.

Sorry…I felt the need to throw that out there.
And believe it or not…I was born in Canada and became an American citizen the LEGAL way. šŸ˜‰
