Please don't blast me for not using the search. I did but didn't find much. I found this custom made plate.

What actual, for sale products exists to protect the spare under the bed?

I saw an old post pointing to this website: spareskidplate.com but it seems to be defunct.

if there were many people experiencing damage to the spare, skids would be available from many different vendors......must not be many experiencing that issue

You’re probably right but I’d like something.

A lot of owners move the spare to the bed when wheeling. Problem solved.
…if your bed has sufficient open space. Many different use scenarios for a Jeep, not all of them involve rock crawling or mudding with an empty bed.

To the OP, HDPE plastic is pretty tough and slick, and more importantly easy to cut. Maybe consider fabricating something at home?

Another option…. You could get a rear bumper with a tire carrier…..☺

Thanks for the idea. I can probably cut thick HDPE but I don’t have the tools or skills to cut thick steel.

I was referring to the majority of owners. Just trying to help.

If done the right way it might make it easier to secure or lower the spare tire when needed. :like: the HDPE would be light weight and long lasting.
With a tire as wide as in the utube videos heading it would stick down lower the the center section of the axle anyway. :giggle:

I started noticing rock scrapes on my spare on fairly mild shelf drops. I added a hitch insert skid and haven’t seen any more. It hangs down enough to protect the tire (37x12.5 in my case) on flat shelf drops but doesn’t negatively impact departure angle in most other situations. But yes, once in a while you will scrape the skid when you might have otherwise had no contact on tire or hitch.

The one I got is not real cheap, but there are lot of cheaper hitch skids out there. You’ll find that a lot of people here have them

Like fourfa said, a lot of us have hitch skids. I've had a Body Armor Backbone since 2021 and I've beat the hell out of it since it's the lowest part of the back of the Jeep. In addition to a skid plate, it's a wheel chock, step, and a recovery point (with a soft shackle or strap with built in loops). When slid into the receiver all the way, it sits almost right up against the spare tire providing it some protection. I have a JTR with the off road rear bumper and bed rock rails and this skid really makes the most susceptible part of a pickup truck almost bulletproof on the trail.

With the kind of money you're talking for a manufactured skid plate of any kind, you'd just be better off putting the spare in the bed and using a cargo strap to hold it down.

First thing I learned when I started wheeling pickups (a 94 Ranger long bed) is that the first mod is to pull the spare tire out from under the bed. Its a bad day when your spare is stuck under the bed because you're in a rut and there's no space between the ground and your frame to slide it out.
