I’m installing the Badland winch on my new aluminum RockHard4x4 bumper and I’ve hit a roadblock with the mounting bolts. The provided bolts are M10, 30mm long, galvanized (I believe) grade 8.8 hex head bolts with 1.50 mm thread pitch. Unfortunately, the 30mm mounting bolts Harbor Freight provided that go into the square nuts are too short for this bumper and I need to source longer 35 or 40mm ones. The provided bolts appear to be galvanized but I’m not totally sure.

I have several questions and hopefully someone on here can help me out.

  • The texture and appearance look like they are galvanized. Can anyone confirm this? I’m having a tough time finding galvanized M10 bolts that will match the provided square nuts.
  • Where is the best place to source a longer replacement bolt with the same characteristics as the provided bolts?
  • Is it more advantageous to switch to imperial grade 8/metric grade 10.9 steel? Or is galvanized better for this application (outside, salty/wet/snow/muddy environment)? I know stainless steel will gall up unless I use anti-seize. If I do this, I’ll need to source a matching grade flat washer, spring washer, and square nut because I probably shouldn’t mix stainless steel with whatever hardware came with the winch. This may not be worth the extra effort?
I’ll post pics of the hardware when I can get to it in a couple of hours.

I’m probably overthinking this but I don’t want the winch to rip off the bumper because I used improper hardware.

yeah, that’s what I’ve found in my preliminary search but I can’t seem to find anything in their inventory that matches.

Thanks but I think I should probably go with the same finish (hot dipped galvanized) as the rest of the hardware. And from what I understand yellow zinc-chromate plating is not as corrosion-resistant as galvanized!
My winch hardware is zinc coated and so are all of my metal cloak control arm bolts and brackets. They have been fine. Besides I don’t think true galvanized bolts can be rated to 8 or metric 10.9. You can get drop coating and for McMaster car it’ll be black instead of silver but that’s about it

run a 10.9 bolt, it will be stronger then what comes with the winch. hey If it does rust some it will make it harder to steal!

the problem with that is finding 10.9 square nuts that will fit into the winch.

use the nuts that came with it they are 8.8 or better and will be fine, Honestly you are over thinking it

If you are worried about rust, paint the bolts and grease the threads. I use 10.9 or 12.9 bolts whenever I can to replace the relatively weak 8.8 stuff. The 8.8 stuff is not galvanized, it is zinc plated.
