To anyone in the South San Jose area of California. Can you recommend a vehicle weigh station so I can get our Mojave weighed for the DMV? This seems to be a problem specific to the Gladiator being classified as a commercial vehicle and that I bought it new in Oregon (no local dealers with the options in stock and needed to buy it my end of March for discounts).

I've searched on Google Maps for weigh stations, public scales etc and there's nothing coming up in SJ other than the CHP enforcement stations Is the Gilroy CAT station really the only option within 50 miles?

Any help is greatly appreciated

I read somewhere that in California all trucks are being classified as commercial now. I noticed on my 1500's registration that it showed commercial as well. Wouldn't surprise me one bit with this damn state.

At the DMV inspection yesterday, the inspector basically said "if it can carry something in the bed, it's considered commercial". I don't see how a vehicle with a gross weight limit of 6000 lbs an unladen weight of 5000 should be automatically classified commercial when there are some sedans that weigh more (e.g. 5300 lbs for my old MB S550), or how this is different from a Wrangler with an enclosed cargo area, but yeah, this is where we are now so I have to jump through the hoops.

Are you reluctant to go to CAT scale specifically, or are you just hoping there is something closer?

If the former, I have used a few CAT scales over the years for various things and have been happy enough with the process. Just try to go when they aren't busy with actual commercial trucks waiting in line.

If the latter, I'm not much help...but I did find it funny there are three CAT scale locations circling San Jose, all equally far away.

I'm thinking this may be my only choice. Not opposed to CAT, just wishing there was something closer. Looks like I'll have to find a day to take off and deal with it.

Any recycling center or landfill will have scales.

All trucks in CA are considered commercial vehicles and have been for decades. Nothing new. Great for finding parking spots in yellow zones. js

Illinios (Chicago) had a law where commercial vehicles were not allowed on Lakeshore drive. Depending on where you lived in Illinios and how you insured your vehicle determined how a pickup truck was registered. A neighbor drove a company pickup truck and was registered as a passenger vehicle. My friend had his personal vehicle registered as a commercial vehicle. He never questioned why and drove it that way. Then one day, my friend and neighbor helped another friend with a move. They took Lakeshore Drive and the puckup with the commercial vehicle tag was pulled over and got a ticket.

He tried to straighten out the registration with Illinios but once registered as a commercial vehicle it remains thay way until new ownership.

Two places that I like to avoid, Chicago and California. Well, most places in California.

Here in Idaho the regular passenger vehicle registration weight limit is 8,000lbs, and that includes whatever you're towing. People with campers get popped all the time.

I also bought in Oregon and had mine weighed in Placerville. Just a heads-up, if you take your hardtop off and your spare tire out you should be under 5000 pounds which should save you something like $75.00 a year...

Pick ups have been classified as commercial in California since at least the early 90’s. Back then you could put a shell on them to remove that commercial rating (and I believe save a few dollars on registration). I’m not sure if that still applies.

I don't think that's possible any more. I have a shell on already and when I did the DMV inspection they said it didn't matter. Because it has a bed the shell could be taken off and the vehicle loaded up which would cause more wear on the road.

I just also bought a Gladiator Mojave in upper Oregon, what a long drive. Congrats! I didn't know I had to get it weighed, that helps me a lot, I will do that today before I go to the DMV.

Just go to CA.GOV and search public scales listing near you. 2 years ago I had an independent mobile DMV vehicle inspector come out to inspect a Toyota Tundra i had purchased from Idaho and needed to be registered in CA. It had a camper shell on the bed and was given the option to register the truck as a passenger vehicle instead of commercial.
