I share your perspective.
A couple of the dealers I’ve spoken to are in affluent areas. They didn’t seem terribly interested in making a deal. At first it seemed like they were low pressure, but it also seemed that they figured if I didn’t but it, someone else would. Is that it or had they maybe just hit their numbers for the month? Or are these Jeeps just so hot that they don’t need to deal?
There are some dealers who are MSRP only. They can easily do it because if you walk, others will bite. And when all dealers in the area for that brand pretty much sell that way, you have little choice.
Their flexing is often in the trade value. The MSRP ones will sometimes give more in trade, but not always. Here they come close to matching the online "we'll buy your car!" places (which don't give near as much as our dealers do on trade)

Here, though, you are looking at sticker prices. The only help you can get is affiliate pricing and FCA incentives.
And if they get a vehicle from another dealer - you deal with their prices, not what the OTHER dealer had it listed at.

When was the last time you bought a new vehicle?

So, is the consensus that I should make the drive to the dealer that’s got the Jeep in transit, rather than having a nearby dealer try to trade for it? (Even if my nearby dealer seems more interested in dealing)

If your nearby dealer "seems more interested" - why not use that?
You won't know until you actually TALK TO THE OTHER directly, in person. (that's almost always better than on the phone as it shows you are at least willing to make some effort)

You guys are a goldmine of information. Thanks a bunch!

One more:
Should I wait to visit the “other” dealer (the one who has the jeep in transit) until they actually have the car on the lot, or is it more advantageous for them to have it sold before it before it arrives?

I went to the same dealer since 1978 and even worked there as a service writer in the early 90’s. It was a dealer that I trusted… Until 2022, my luck had run out.

Owner died a couple years earlier and his son (& shrew wife) took over. Over the last few years she chased away parts manager, advisors, technicians (many who worked there for over 20-30 years…

I found a new dealer the same distance from my home, as the old one

The service advisor was amazing and one of the techs recognized me from the old dealership came over shook my hand & called me by name. I had found my “new” service department.

If I ever buy another new vehicle I would build it online and ask for quotes.

A friend of mine put out for quotes on a new Ford.

He was getting ready to sign the paperwork when another dealer called him with a much better offer (same options on both).
He ask the dealer if the would match and they said no so walked out of the showroom, drove to the other dealership and bought there

There are dealerships around the country that will give far better pricing than many local dealer.

In your situation go to the dealer that has the one you want on order and get his price in writing.

Go to the dealer that is closer and tell him what you want, and if he can not order it, he should look to see if another dealer has it.

Ask him for a quote in writing.

Their quotes should help you decide where to buy.

I got about 1500 more knocked off my 2020 when I showed them a quote from another dealer (which was about 3K lower but a lot farther away.......)
I said I'll meet you in the middle and sign right now.
The boss said - so if we don't, you leave? Yup.
OK, here's your new price.
My wife said "I can't believe you did that" after we left with the new truck.

When traded my 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee in on my Gladiator I went to their website the night before and filled out the paperwork for an online quote as to what it’s worth.

The next day the new car manager gave a trade in quote that was less than the amount I received from the dealer the night before.

He asked when the offer was made and I said last night and he changed the trade in value to $2,000 more (Which was greater than the online offer).

Hey the money in my pocket is better than the money in his pocket. 😁

Unless you have to have a new vehicle today take your time and shop around, get the best price.

I found a jeep equipped as I want that being built for a dealer about 50 miles from my hometown dealer.

I’d drive the 50 miles if it means substantial savings, but I’d prefer to show some loyalty to may local dealer since that’s where I’ll go for service.

My guess is that it’s always best to buy from the guy who has it on the lot (or soon to be on the lot), but just wondering…

Can I get the same deal on a Jeep that’s ordered by another dealer ?
My dealer made a trade, so there was no mark-up.

I found the jt that i wanted, but the dealer holding it refused to tell me the price over email.

I found another dealer and we negotiated the price for that very same truck. A day later, I traded in my old jku and got the jt. No upcharge.
The original holding dealer later contacted me and asked why i did not buy from them. They could have just as easily made a no hassle sale. LoL

For a while, I drove cars for my dealership when we did "dealer trades". It wasn't actually a trade, but each dealership involved sold the involved vehicle to the other dealership. When I took a car to the other dealership, I also took a check to pay for the car I drove back. When I left that dealership with the "traded" car, I bought back a check from them for the car that I drove from my dealership. So it wasn't actually a "trade" but instead was each dealership selling the other a car.

How much less than MSRP was the amount of the check?

Well, I’m planning to visit the distant dealer this afternoon.

I’ll try not to let on, but I thought I’d try to strike a deal on this one before it arrives so someone else does.

It happens to have all the options that I want and nothing that I don’t.

I’ve got a bogey in mind and if they hit it, great; if not, then I start the long drive home.
