Hey guys. I am getting close to needing new tires. I plan on putting 35 MT on. I am interested in impact to fuel economy and felt power. I am currently running 33 MTs. Any input is appreciated. Not interested in moving to 37s btw. Thanks.

Depending on much heavier the new 35's are compared to your current 33's. Probably not at all noticeable.

I went with 37s and haven't noticed a difference. Maybe 1-2 mpg drop. Still uses 8th gear, still squeals the tires when you get on it.

For reference, I run Toyo OC III in 35s and I see 20ish average. IIRC I'm about 98lbs each corner for wheel/tire weight. About 70/30 split for highway/city, and all of my highway driving is 70mph. at 55-60mph I'll see a few mpg increase.

No noticeable loss in power, no gear hunting. Still pulls my 2,000lb trailer without any fuss.

I ran BFG 35s for the first 50k and routinely hit 24 mpg on highway. Jumped to 37s and it dropped about 2 mpg, but the switch came at the same time I added a rack, awning and RTT. I definitely blame those for the drop.

Never had a problem with 35s when it came to gear hopping or low-end grunt. Engine handles it well. Just remember to recalibrate the speedo, or risk some tickets.

This doesn't help if you are married to the "it's got 35s" idea, but several tire manufacturers make an LT305/70 R17 size in MT or aggressive RT treads that work out to ~34 x ~12. They will fit on your stock wheels, are not as heavy as 35x12.5s (less unsprung weight), shouldn't throw rocks for the most part, and accomplish most of what it seems you are hoping to do. The JTRD seems almost immune to tire size within reason.

p.s. I have not leveled mine yet, because I pull a fairly heavy 16-foot box trailer with it. I plan to level it with a Teraflex kit and add airbags in the back to avoid looking like a 22-year-old tool with a trust fund every time I hook up the trailer. I ended up going with the LT295/70R17 in Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac R/Ts and love 'em. They are as quiet as an AT, and I like the look. I previously had a smaller set on a JTOD that was drowned by Hurricane Helene.

That’s awesome. Not stuck on 35s, but I do want a little bigger. Thanks for the info.

I would love 37s, but I am not interested in a lift. I do beach driving in NC and off-roading in VA. So far the 33s have worked great. The only reason I will go up to 35s is for looks.
