After 55 years of work... Whatever the hell I want!
Hi all. I’m a new Gladiator owner and first time here. I bought a ‘23 Overland and am having trouble with the GPS. when I try to type in an address, several of the numbers and letters are grayed out and won’t work. I’ve done a hard and soft reset and they still don’t work.🤷

I think it anticipates what the next digit is going to be and greys out the choices that “aren’t possible”.

I find it interesting that the Jeep system forces things a bit backwards from what I'm used to......
I'm used to address, street, city, state.
It wants state first, and address last. Even using voice for waze or google it allows me to say it like you write it on an old fashioned USPS envelope.

Are those addresses new (newer than the GPS data) or is there some other way to write them? It apparently does not have those addresses in its system or it has them differently or wrong..

TomTom in the 2024 and 2025 does it differently than the 23 and prior versions of NAV in the smaller head unit. .

Before 2024 and the upgraded radio/NAV, you had to start by selecting a state, then a city, then a street name, then the address.
That's how it knows to "gray out" numbers that don't exist, or prevent you from plugging in a street name that doesn't exist in that city.
If you got Mockingbird Lane in and tried to type in 1312 it wouldn't let you if the only address on Mockingbird lane was 1313.

Hope they fixit for you. One of the reasons I like either CarPlay or Android is the same system in any car I drive., on my Iphone, on my Mac. I think car manufacturers are wasting a lot of money, building software when the same function is available from phone, and GPS device makers.

You might be surprised by the number of people who prefer to simply hit a button and have it all displayed, including turn directions in the cluster right in front of you.
Some just won't mess with the technology of mirroring a phone, launching the phone app and so on. My wife won't use anything but the built in NAV - as it is with most of our friends. I'm one of the few I know who do on occasion use the phone but prefer to do it with the built-in system. It's so much easier, especially now that they're using TomTom in the new ones.

Carplay/AA is only good when you have cell signal, your phone battery is good, and/or your phone is functional.

It’s not uncommon for our *taken for granted* awesome technology goes bezerk and you’re left frantically rebooting, plugging in, or otherwise…..want to throw the damn thing across the room/highway. 😆

Every once in a while, I will switch over to the factory Nav for whatever reason. I’m glad I have it…..

Not everyone is ‘tech’ savy. My sister-n-law whom is very intelligent working around on her desktop computer in & around her accounting software & such… She has a hard time knowing what button to push to get access to Carplay and knowing what to push from that point….. She’s happier just using the Factory Nav.

Know of a senior couple with a brand new Lexus that they absolutely refuse to take the time and learn the infotainment system. They stick a old school Garmin GPS unit to the windshield and use that for navigation that is probably 10+ years out of date on the maps.

The neighbors just to the east of me, and the widower to the west of me - never owned computers, never used computers, use flip phones. They will use the built-in NAV as long as it's easy, otherwise "they just know how to get there". Larry, 82, will use maps.
We'd still not have broadband out here if not for the grant - not enough demand to make it worthwhile for the only company in the whole area to "bother with us". OTOH, when they had a big thing at the community center in town explaining that broadband internet was here, inviting everyone in the area to come check things out, sign up and so on - that room was FULL - including the guy who still uses a flip phone. But I think some of it was "my house will be worth more if there's fiber to the house" type of thing, although the techs who connected this house said they have been busy out here with actual installs.
My son will use his phone - his wife will use the NAV in the vehicle.
OF the people I know, it's really a mix - most, though, lean for the NAV because it's there, it's simple, and it works, and it takes fewer steps to use than a phone - and keeping a phone charged up and so on.
We use either the NAV, or I use my phone (wife refuses to bother with the phone nav) but I have to use voice or have things pre-loaded as we subscribed to a system that monitors phone screen use while driving - so - I either use it ALL IN, 100%, including voice commands, or use the Jeep's NAV. I'm fine with it - look up things on my laptop, tell it to "send to my phone" and when I get in, it's there, ready to go.
So I take it a step farther - start out using a BIG SCREEN I can actually see, with a real keyboard, look things up, choose my route - "send to phone", done.
