OIL, 0-20 or otherwise (couldn't find the other oil threads)

Deleted member 67086

My 2024 Mojave Gladiator will on the next oil change be running 5W-30 from here on out. The only remaining decision is whether to use Pennzoil Ultra, Mobile 1, Schaeffer's, or Amsoil. I am mildly surprised to find the Pennzoil Ultra in the lead for the moment. It is less expensive than Schaeffers (everything is less expensive than Schaeffers) and is easily acquired at Walmart. 0W-20 is not required, only "recommended" as per the Owner's Manual. If it were "required", it would say "required". Believe it. The legal department at Stellantis pours over every word.
I’m sure some will disagree with your decision on 5w30, but you are right, the manual “recommends” a lot of things many don’t follow, like using Mopar brand oil, changing engine oil when the indicator says to, not needing to change automatic transmission fluid unless it gets contaminated (ex. water), etc.

Many people here do that, and the Motor Oil Geek has a video on that system, and how well it works. You can change it earlier, but it's really very good at tracking when it "should" be changed.

FCA is literally following ZF's lead on that one. ZF says the same thing (aside from saying it can go something like 150,000 miles - ZF's words, not mine)

As for the 5w30 - run whatever, but - it won't matter. There's evidence of that out there as well. (Like the Wrangler owner who had been using 5w30 and lost his intake cam)

The ZF oil is good for the lifetime of the trans. At some point the old oil will cause the trans to fail, hence at the end of the trans life,,, LOL . Does anyone really know why the cams are failing? Bad oil or bad cam?

Follow the posts.
It's not an oil viscosity thing.
Even FCA has said it's a manufacturing issue. (I have other ideas as well)
It's pretty fair to say - it's not the oil viscosity, especially since some have been running 5w30 and STILL seen cams fail.

However, there are differences in oils even of the same viscosity, so there is that.

Actually ZF recommends fluid changes at 150,000 km, not miles, so roughly 93,000 miles…..a little better than 150k.

Yeah, I should have typed km, not miles.
Well, I typed the 150,000 right!

You could also go 100,000 and not have a problem. Go figure.

I know mines electronic problem. But Crap just as cheap to buy a low mileage used ine as opposed to a TCM and Valve body .
