I bought this unit in 2023, its a 202180th annoversary and it came with an extended warranty with 10 free oil changes. So even though i normally do my own, I figured why waste them. This was the 5th. Picked it up drove 16 kms just out sode of town and the engine light goes on. Codes for oil presure (even though dash said around the usual 30 then25. And i look. Oil on the ground wherei pull overto park and just residue onthe dipstick at firdt pull. Waiting on a tow to get it back there. Wpnderi g what typeof warrantyi should be expecting if they just try to put oil back in and send me on my way?

Whatever it is, make sure to get it written. @JeepCares might be able to assist?

Good luck!

Oh thats the plan, in writing. Not expecting much from the dealer at this point. Trying to calm down while I wait for the tow so I'm not escorted out of the building once I show up.

You didn't drive it after the light came on, and it still showed oil pressure when you shut it down. Odds are they screwed up the O-ring installing the filter housing cap (one of many reasons I hate this terrible design). Makes a hell of a mess, it will require a new o-ring, but there's no damage done. Good luck cleaning all the oil that's dripped all over the top and sides of the engine, down onto the skids, and everywhere else. It will smell like burnt oil for a month or better. You can see the pinched O-ring in this pic after I had a similar experience. I'd push for them to cover a full detail job.

^^ yup. worst design ever IMO.
Between the housing being plastic and it being on top of the engine I don't think you could design it worse if you tried. Give me a normal screw on replacement metal filter with built in O-ring that I can reach from underneath where I have to pull the plug from anyway.

Nope looks dry in that area. Thinking it was the oring, unless maybe the housimg itself. Juat got it back there, spoke to the service manager, calmly. He's "going to take care of me". But I'll be getting it in writing before I leave with the vehicle. Told him they can do their thing and I assume they are going to put oil in it, acan and clear the codes I already scanned and screenshotted and call it good. Also told him they're gona need to givr the engine bay a clea ing because of the smell of the leaked oil burning. But kept it short and sweet and neededto leave so I can keep my calm and also try to not waste the entire day of the things I wont be getting done now. Told him I pick my daughter up in an hour n a half so Ill call amd touch base before that. He offered a vehicke for now but I told him if Ill wait to see how long they take. I have my wifes today for now but pnly for a couple more hours so no point in wasting more of my time working that out until the end of the day approaches.

IMO, the design is ok, but people knowing how to deal with plastic parts that seal with an o-ring, that's where the problem is
People don't understand o-rings.
The o-ring seals, not the tightness of the cap. It could be at 0 ft/lbs as long as that o-ring was in place and it would seal.
Lube the damned o-ring, keep the thing STRAIGHT, and don't over-tighten. Snug is fine, more tight does not mean a better seal because the o-ring seals it
If people could think of that thing in the lines of a hydraulic line plugged into the back of a tractor - thousands of PSI against that o-ring, and it seals without any "torque" on the connector.
Or how about your quick-connect air hoses?

Sorry, it's the dummies that deal with the filter housing that are the bigger issue, not the housing itself.

I get all of that, but what's wrong with a regular replaceable filter like we used for 50+ years? At least then the oring is built in and can't be installed wrong or pushed out of place when being installed. Over torquing still happened, but it almost never caused a leak and worst case I could hammer a screw driver through the damn thing in order to get the leverage to get it off because the entire thing was going in the trash anyway. And if it's on the bottom the oil change is done from 1 spot aside from pouring the new oil in.

Little Timmy's first job was a fail. The newbie just graduated from the car wash station and moved on to the oil change bay.

Unfortunately, I hear this same story all of the time. Sounds like you shut it off in time and serious damage was avoided. Documentation is a good idea as you know.

I always liked the idea oil a metal can on the lower end and for extra caution I would put a filter mag on it, which would help with piece of mind in this scenario, ut it is what it is I guess. Just spoke to him again for an update, they topped up the oil after about 2L or so it was on the dipstick but they are doing another oil change on it again. He said to be up front the oil filter housimg was not on correctly or toght enough but will be cleaning it all up and checking everything over again to make sure there is no other issues before letting me have it back and if not ready by end of day a vehicle os waiting for me already just in case. I'm obviously not happy but am being pretty good about it and givong them the benefit of the doubt to make it right. Time will tell and that little 'what if' in the back of my head will be there for good though now. I'll be touching base again by 430 if I havent heard anything either way. Really wasting a day with somthing so annoying and frustrating and trying to be reasonable is not ideal but I don't know if things will/would work out any bettergping in screaming and yelling so trying hard to have patience

The joys of companies being led by penny-pinchers. It's easier and cheaper to sell a paper filter insert for $10 than a metal-encased filter for $8.

A few years ago I did the oil change on our A4. The filter is on top, like the JTs. It was stuck. And somewhere thru the years I've lost my big channel locks. I couldn't run out and get some, so I had to think smart. It was after our move, and I didn't know where my drill bits, so I couldn't pry it off.

I have these nylon cord organizers for extension cords, rope, etc. Looped it around the filter and chocked the filter off. I was pretty impressed with that solution.

I guess I'm a minority but I love having the oil filter right up top easy to get to and take off with a 24mm. No mess either since you can just crack it let it drain back down. Cartridge or spin on doesn't really matter to me, they take the same amount of time so it's a wash. Metal instead of plastic would be nice for longevity though.
