Motor Oil Compliance Funnel

- This is an analysis of motor oil viscosity grades, for the gasoline engine, listed in 1) the online version of the Jeep Gladiator owner's manual (revised), and 2) the "Mobil 1 Engine Oils Product Guide Sheet" (attached)
- This can, of course, be done for any brand of motor oil; I used the Mobil 1 guide out of convenience

This post is meant to be a reference doc. My intention is not to create another massive motor oil thread. With that said, feel free to post a reply if you have something to add.

Motor Oil Compliance Funnel

- Each manufacturer specification is denoted in blue except when a product doesn't meet spec
- Each grade listed under a filter fits the description of the filter

Filter #1 (5 Grades): Listed in Online Version of Jeep Gladiator Owner's Manual (Revised)
0W-20 (recommended)
0W-30
5W-20
5W-30
10W-30

Next, key info from the "Mobil 1 Engine Oils Product Guide Sheet" (May 2022, attached) is filtered by compliance factor and one additional motor oil standard.

Filter #2 (5 of 5 Grades): API Certified
- All five Mobil 1 products listed throughout this post are API Certified
0W-20: Mobil 1 Extended Performance
0W-30: Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy (meets dexos 1 Gen 3, but does not meet MS-6395)
5W-20: Mobil 1 Extended Performance (meets MS-6395, but does not meet dexos 1 Gen 3)
5W-30: Mobil 1 Extended Performance
10W-30: Mobil 1 Extended Performance (does not meet MS-6395 or dexos 1 Gen 3)
Other viscosity grades are not listed in the online version of the Jeep Gladiator owner's manual (revised)

Filter #3 (3 of 5 Grades): Meets FCA/Chrysler MS-6395
0W-20: Mobil 1 Extended Performance
5W-20: Mobil 1 Extended Performance (meets MS-6395, but does not meet dexos 1 Gen 3)
5W-30: Mobil 1 Extended Performance

Filter #4 (3 of 5 Grades): Meets GM dexos 1 Gen 3
- This motor oil standard is relevant because it includes rigorous seal testing
0W-20: Mobil 1 Extended Performance
0W-30: Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy (meets dexos 1 Gen 3, but does not meet MS-6395)
5W-30: Mobil 1 Extended Performance

Filter #5 (2 of 5 Grades): API Certified and Meets MS-6395 & dexos 1 Gen 3
0W-20: Mobil 1 Extended Performance
5W-30: Mobil 1 Extended Performance

Filter #6 (1 of 5 Grades): Recommended in Owner's Manual
0W-20 (API Certified, MS-6395, and SAE 0W-20)

I use SAE 0W-20 for no other reason than it is recommended in the owner's manual. If I were considering other grades, I would look at Filter #3 (meets MS-6395) first, and then Filter #5 (API Certified and meets MS-6395 & dexos 1 Gen 3). As mentioned above, the products in Filter #3 are also API Certified.

History of Viscosity Grades of Motor Oil Specified for 3.6L Pentastar Gasoline V6 Engine
In reverse-chronological order

0W-20: Recommended viscosity grade for Jeep Gladiator (gas) since its launch in 2020 model year
0W-20: Recommended viscosity grade for Jeep Wrangler (gas) in owner's manual for 2019 model year
0W-20: Recommended viscosity grade for 3.6L Pentastar Upgrade (PUG) engine, with significant design changes, since 2016 model year
5W-30: Recommended viscosity grade when production began, of original 3.6L Pentastar Gasoline V6 engine, in calendar year 2010 (see owner's manual for 2011 Grand Cherokee)

The change from the original Pentastar engine (2010) to the PUG engine (model year 2016) is, of course, significant because this is when the recommended viscosity grade changed from 5W-30 to 0W-20. I have read that the PUG engine was designed around 0W-20, but I do not have any evidence to support or refute this claim. Likewise, I do not have any evidence (not inferences) that the change from 5W-30 to 0W-20 was a result of the accountants overriding the engineers (a change on paper only) in order to meet CAFE standards.

It may be more accurate to say that CAFE standards drove the decision to redesign the engine for use with the more fuel-efficient 0W-20 motor oil. Documented proof will be welcome.

One of the revisions to the 2020 Jeep Gladiator owner's manual, on page 251 of the online version, is that five API Certified motor oil grades are listed. However, SAE 0W-20 is recommended in the next paragraph on the same page.

I have no further comment beyond what I wrote in the History section of my original post above.

I saw that too and took it the same way most did. I wanted to make sure we were on the same page before I commented. My interpretation is ANY of the API configurations will work but they “recommend“, NOT REQUIRE, 0w-20 for reasons other than the API certification.

A lot of people get thrown off by all of these internet videos, and oil testing and such. Really, oil testing under 11k break-in period is worthless and after that 0w-20 will probably show less wear in controlled conditions but in the heat and dusty crap I run in, I’ll feel better with some configuration of API in the 30 range.
