✅ Note: While Mobil 1 was previously used in some Chrysler factories, it is no longer officially listed under current MS-6395 certifications after Chrysler’s re-alignment with specific formulations. There is a list of approved oil. Ensure the oil meets MS-6395 specification and is full synthetic.
With MS-13340 coming onboard mainly for Turbo applications, a lot of the major brands are no longer testing to retain official MS-6395 certification but still recommending their oils for it. About the only major brand still showing MS-6395 licensed compliance is SOPUS products like Pennzoil which is to be expected because of their official aligned partnership with FCA/Stellantis.

Not surprising that MOBIL is slow or non existent to acquire FCA/Stellantis licensing certifications given their checkered history that dates back to the 2008-2009 Chrysler bankruptcy that saw them not paying suppliers and Mobil's refusal to extend them credit and product for their then factor fill in manufacturing. With FIAT's then purchase of Chrysler, Mobil also loss out on their strategic partnership to be the "official" factory fill oil to SOPUS.

If anybody thinks Mobil 1 is a substandard product because it does not carry MS-6395 certification, then they do not really understand oils and Mobil as a company.

Mobil 1, while widely used and API-certified, showed poorer wear protection in the Four-ball test compared to top contenders like Amsoil and Royal Purple, indicating limitations in certain high-stress scenarios.

For practical real-world validation, oil analysis labs like Amsoil/Oil Analyzers, Blackstone, and Speediagnostix provide reliable used oil analysis (UOA) to monitor engine health, detect contaminants (e.g., copper, fuel dilution), and assess oil degradation. These services are trusted by professional engine builders and performance enthusiasts.

Ultimately, Amsoil and Red Line are among the top performers in real-world testing, especially when supported by UOA data and long-term field use.

Since I tow often long distances with my Gladiator with RPM's often above 4K I need oil with more
  • Viscosity: Use 0W-40, 5W-40 or 10W-30 oils to ensure adequate oil pressure and protection during extended high-RPM operation.
  • HTHS Value: Prioritize oils with HTHS ≥ 3.5 to prevent oil shear and maintain lubrication under load.
  • Additive Package: Look for high anti-wear (ZDDP) and detergent levels to combat soot, heat, and oxidation.
When I'm not towing I use 5W-30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.

That has changed. Mobil 1 had a period of time when Jeep was owned by FCA where FCA refused to give them MS6395 certification due to their relationship to Shell Oil Company (Pennzoil). But that cleared up years ago, when Stellantis took over. Mobil 1 5w20, EP, AFE, Truck & SUV, and possibly even ESP 0w20 oils and 5w20 oils and some 5w30 oils all have MS6395 ratings now.

The Mobil 1 oils still easily met the MS6395 standard, as it it really not that tough to meet. It is one of the easiest in the industry. Mobil 1 at the time sent me a letter, after I had inquired, that their 0w20 oils easily exceeded the criteria. So they would have had serious trouble if they tried to deny a warranty claim. I never heard of FCA even attempting to do that. The API certification of the day was more than enough, as well.

You got anything besides copy paste of Amsoil study data that was done almost 20 years ago and we have had 4 revisions of API since?

Reads like ChatGPT has written most of this for you rather than a personal articulation of understood fact.

Hmmm. Source?

Sequence IVB is the most important test used in the industry at the current time. It measures wear in the valve train, specifically, on the camshafts and bearings. Mobil 1 is known to be a top performer there, especially their high end oils, such as EP, ESP, and Advanced Clean.

Interestingly, the famous 625,000 mile Pentastar was run primarily on vanilla Mobil 1 0w20, which was not their top performer. After all those miles, the camshaft and crankshaft bearings showed almost no wear. The downfall of the engine was the plastic timing belt guides, which had become brittle.

So with that in mind, I wouldn't worry about adequate wear protection. I've run mainly Mobil 1 (and others, including Pennzoil products) for over 40 years and I have never worn out an engine and never saw any sign of significant wear. In fact, my JK 3.8, which ran almost exclusively on "vanilla" Mobil 1 5w20, showed compression that met spec for new in every cylinder at about 180,000 miles. It was checked by a Jeep dealer. I sold it at 196,000 miles. It ran like brand new.

And one more thing...My father was an engineer with General Motors. He worked directly with chemical engineers from Exxon Mobil. He said, bar none, they were the most knowledgeable in the industry and were backed by the best resources, in terms of testing and blending. Most boutique oil companies buy their base stock from Exxon Mobil.

So again, not sure where all this Mobil 1 bashing is coming from. It seems ill-informed, at best. And the situation with FCA and Mobil 1 and MS6395 was nothing more than politics, and it centered around Formula 1 sponsorship for Ferrarri. It was silly. And it is ancient history.

I bought the truck new, a mix of dealer and local shop oil changes, usually at 5k, a few times went until the reminder popped up. Do not specify at the dealer, at local shop, I ask for Penzoil 0W20. No engine issues thus far, knock on wood.
