First off I have a Bak Flip type cover and I don't want to loose that....I like the weather protection it provides without having a full bed cap. I also have aftermarket beadlocks and 35s, but I do not want to mount under. Right now the spare is in the bed, but I use my bed for bed things.

I was considering a hitch mounted spare carrier like a Wilco or something of that sort, but loosing or having to remount the camera seems less appealing. I have read some shorter rack systems can use Bak Flip type bed covers. I am not trying to reinvent the wheel....maybe I should just mount my spare under in the factory location.....assuming I can...will have to check.

What have you done with your Gladiator and spare situation? Just looking at ideas and thoughts.

Thank you for your input.

I was in the same mindset on this, BTW the 35 will fit underneath the bed, it’s tight but it fits. i went this way and love it.

I leave mine out and carry Glue Tread and my compressor at all times. If I go on a long wheeling trip I put it back underneath. But even then I have a lot of trust in the Glue tread.

took a chance and love it, doesn’t rattle, beast strong and can fit a 37”, maybe a 40” with a few mods.

Is there a reason you don't want to mount it underneath? Or are you just assuming it wont fit? A 35 will mount in the factory location no issues. Be sure to mount it face up to avoid marking up the face of your wheels with the carrier.

Mostly the ease of doing a 5 tire rotation when the tire is not mounted under the bed and not bashing the spare offroading.

35"s. 5 matching wheels. Mine is under the bed and I do 5 tire rotate. Under the bed is just as easy or difficult as having it mounted on a swing out or in the bed. I personally think trucks look weird with a bumper mount swing out. You could go with a Wilco replacement tailgate. https://www.overlanded.com/tire-and...-97hQGL8iRETe5wVx5vkTKL9ckWD1oABoCwjEQAvD_BwE

Yeah, I'd argue mounting underneath is much eaiser then try to wrangle a 100+lb wheel and tire combo on/off a swingout.

Also, a 35x12.5 stays tucked up enough that you shouldn't be banging it around on much. Now i could be wrong, but if you are doing something thats going to hit the spare, you're probably already screwed.

I just lay mine down in the back of the truck with a bike cable lock, much quicker if I need it. Lug wrench jack, blocks all back there.

I haven’t blown one tire since I started doing that in 1982. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

I had a Wrangler TJ with the heaviest duty bumper tire carrier on the market and I still ended up mounting the spare in the tub. Too much leverage on the frame, among other issues that don't apply to the JT. No way I'd mount a spare on the back bumper of a gladiator.

Need a spare and need to use the bed? Mount underneath. Add a hitch skid if you want some safety room for obstacles. I fit a 37" STT Pro under my bed with a RockJock straight track bar for a couple years.

Otherwise I know this isn't an option for you since you want weather protection but for others that might come across this thread, I just mount mine high with the spare tire winch from under the bed. Can still haul lumber and whatnot. This is a 40 and no reason it couldn't be a 42 or larger

My 37” is under the bed for now. Future plans include a decked system with the roller top for the spare and badlands off-road jack. Maybe get a skid box fabbed for where the spare went to store spare parts. Some brake cables, tubing, whatever might break on a Gladiator or 4Runner on the trail.
