I am considering installing a pair of the S&B hood scoops. Not the cold air intake right now, just the scoops. Going to try to let more air pass into the engine compartment. Anyone out there have any first hand experience with these.

I ordered them but after 3 months of not receiving them I cancelled the order and just cut the bottom of the stock vents so they are open now.

Have had them on for about 9 months - love them. Like yourself wanted to get more air under the hood (or let the heat out) for my 392. Look good and function well. Have never had to use the "plugs" for rainy weather and boy have we had rainy weather. Install is fairly easy too. Recommend them!

I added a set on mine. Like the looks and also was looking to reduce underhood temps. Just added the CAI but haven’t been able to test it because she’s in the shop for unrelated issues

If you want the look of them great i would not add them in an attempt to make the engine run cooler. If you modify something or tow at max weight or above and that makes it need more heat dissipation from actual temperatures being above normal operating ranges add an oil cooler, increase the size of the radiator or as mentioned start with having the fan kick up to speed at a bit lower temperature to pull more air through the radiator. The only risk with the fan is if it increases air at higher speed or gets in the way decreasing air that can be forced through the grill, coolers and radiator.

If you want your engine's cooling system to work more efficiently, you need to get more airflow through the radiator. If you install hood scoops that effectively increase the air pressure under the hood, you will have less airflow through the radiator. You want heat extractors - not hood scoops - if you want more air passing through the engine compartment.

Are you aware of any type of bolt on HEAT EXTRACTOR? Something that might replace the fake ones on the fenders?

You can cut the bottom out of the fake OEM vents to make them functional, but they still aren't open to a lot of airflow because most of their surface area is solid, not vented. If you want to maximize airflow you can consider these bolt-on options:

PPE Offroad
Motobilt
Steinjäger

Some aftermarket hoods have decent venting. And you can always make your own vents with some louvers from GenRight. You need to make sure that they are located in a low-pressure zone on the hood and not acting like an old-school cowl induction if placed in a high-pressure zone.

Holding a hand over the modified OEM and the PPE vents when at rest confirms heat rises out of the vents while stopped. While parked with the front of the Jeep pointed into a headwind, there is noticeably more heat that flows out of those vents, as the wind forced in through the radiator must escape from the engine bay. Similarly, when the engine fan comes on, significant airflow rushes out of the hood vents.

But I wanted more confirmation than that to verify that the vents are functional at highway speeds. I used a thermal camera to verify that my PPE vents are extracting a lot of heat at speed. I've also used a Halloween fogger underhood to visually confirm airflow out of the vents while moving at highway speeds. Logically the more we can reduce underhood pressure, the more air that can flow through the radiator. Aerodynamics is a challenging and invisible science but I think it's safe to say that if you want more air passing through the engine compartment, some functional vents will do the trick.

A hood scoop, on the other hand, will be fighting the underhood pressure of the air ramming in through the radiator, and if anything will likely be counterproductive. One of the S&B hood scoops can be tied into their intake system to draw outside air into the airbox, but the OEM intake already draws cool air so there isn't likely to be any measurable difference there.

Some people like the looks of the hood scoops though. Just as there are some people who like to collect and display ducks.

Just as an additional data point - I did put one of the S&B scoops on my v8 swapped JKU - lots of custom cutting on the intake side of my hood - and it did lower my measured air intake temps significantly when driving at speed. At crawl speeds it lowered temps by around 20F - degrees. I use HP Tuners to track temps. I do have a cold air intake on my motor and I think my next step is going to be to isolate the cone from the rest of the bay.
