So I've had this code pop up and disappear within a day. I have the extended warranty, so I visited the dealership, and the first thing the service rep asked was if I had filled my tank that day or the day before with Costco, Walmart, or HEB (local grocery store) gas. I told him that I had filled up with Costco gas the day before. He told me that he sees that code with poor-quality gas and to never get gas from the aforementioned stations. He cleared the code and recommended that I add a fuel additive. I had some B&G, so I went ahead and added that to my tank. I rarely, if ever, get gas from Costco and mainly visit QT, Shell, or Valero. I was trying to remember if the past times the code had popped up I had purchased fuel from Costco, but I don't know if the dates correlate.

Has anyone else experienced this, or was he just blowing smoke up my ass?

P0340 has literally nothing to do with fuel quality. I’d love to know your service reps reasoning for thinking bad gas causes that code. But of course, he’s willing to sell you some BG product. As a former service manager and tech myself that still twists wrenches a lot, that pisses me off so bad that your dealer told you that and is exactly why I don’t trust dealers. Period.

That code requires a diag of the cam sensor. Could just be a loose connector.

I already owned the B&G fuel additive. He actually recommended some Seafoam 🤣

Everybody in a specific refinery region gets the same spot market gas delivered to their brand specific gas station. It is the add pack if any that makes the difference between brands but is not required.

There is "bad" specific gas stations sometimes due to equipment failure that allows water or other contaminants or delivery driver error mixing fuel types but carte blanche bad brands because they are sold in discount retail establishments is bunk.

I’m more afraid of gas from stations that do not do the volume of a Costco or Sam’s Club. I’ve used Sam’s and Costco as much as possible and have never had a fuel related issue with them. It’s the sketchy no name stations that make me squeamish.

I only run Costco gas in all my vehicles and have never had a problem. Unless I’m out away from home and have to fill up somewhere else.

I have the opposite experience with respect to Costco. I believe it to be among the best fuels available in my area. I have found other bulk/low-cost fuel stores to supply crap fuel, but not Costco.

I have ONLY used Costco Gas in my Jeep's with Zero Issues. In fact Costco is one of the "Top Tier" fuels available today, compared to most other brands. Cheaper gas may save you today, but if you plan to keep your vehicle long term, it will cost you more in repairs long term.
