We've had two of these Maccabee Camping Chairs that we bought at Costco guessing around 2003, they are still my fav chairs hands down. To many "director style" chairs would pinch the backside of my leg, felt like they were cutting off circulation.

I’ve bought so many of these in search of something good that I could start a YouTube channel just to review them. I’ve acquired so many over the years I end up giving them away to family.

The honest answer unfortunately is, it depends.

If you want to sit upright at a table, the most useable chair that’s still comfortable for sitting around a fire and reasonably packable is the Yeti trailhead. This is my go to chair, but they’re not warm.

I find that the standard clone folding chair like these Kelty chairs https://a.co/d/0fkPDVgT all suffer from the same problem. You sit too deep in them to be good for sitting at a table. These are perfectly good chairs otherwise, but none of them are super comfortable from cheap ones to expensive ones except the oversized ones like the ones below.

My preferred versions of this type chair for lounging around a campfire are either of these

The Picnic Time chairs are super comfortable, have an adjustable angle and are reasonably well made. They’re not good for sitting around a table. Importantly you can rest you head on their high back.

For winter I like these King Camp heated chairs. They’re oversized and cozy and again not good for sitting around a table.

Other options:

If you need a simple, relatively cheap chair for sitting at a table that folds up compact, Front Runner or this style is good. https://a.co/d/0gCcINai

I have a few Cliq chairs that I can throw in the truck because they fold up so compactly. Only one model has a head rest. https://www.cliqproducts.com/products/cliq-epiq-lounge
Their Riviera is a nice version of butterfly chair that’s compact. All the Cliq stuff is insanely priced but it’s good stuff. These two aren’t great for sitting at a table.

I have a few Helinox chairs too, mostly for backpacking. I keep one in the truck. I don’t consider this type of chair great for overlanding. It sort of defeats the point of having a vehicle if you’re going to sit in a backpacking chair.

Everyone’s favorite is the Kelty low down couch, especially the dog. They also make a love seat. Again, obviously not for sitting at a table but everyone loves it. I always take this even if I have to strap it to the roof. https://a.co/d/08jDLgdv

Lastly for the beach at Ocracoke I’ve started taking Inflatable chairs from Bote. They’ve discontinued the Aerorondak but they still make a smaller inflatable chair. Get an electric pump for these. The reason for getting these is that the beach ruins mechanical chairs. I had to warranty one of my Yeti’s because the hardware backed out. I’m pretty sure it was from sand. These you can put in salt water at the waters edge and just hose off. They’re pretty compact when deflated. They’re not super comfortable as camp chairs unless you get some pads. They also have magnets to hold beverages and can holders that of course Bote also sells. https://a.co/d/01aSpeH2

Mechanical beach chairs:

Bote now makes a mechanical beach chair and Yeti makes low beach chairs now too but the Tommy Bahama beach chairs at Costco are just fine. Anything you take to the beach is eventually ruined anyway. I don’t take my Yeti’s to the beach anymore.

What I actually pack:

For camping at the beach:
Yeti trailheads and the Kelty Couch for camp Bote Aerorondaks for the beach.

For other overlanding mountain bike trips, etc: Yetis and the Kelty Couch

If I have to lug shit around, like sporting events: Cliq chairs.

Tailgating:
Kelty Couch. I also have a bar height folding chair that sits up at my bed slide out.

Winter:
King Camp and the Kelty Couch

I just grab cheapos. I know they’re going to break eventually so I just keep em clean until they decide to give up the ghost and keep a spare around for when they do. I’ve looked at the more expensive ones but haven’t been able to justify it to myself.

Portal folding rocking chair. Had one since 2014, gets used camping every year and it’s still in great shape. They may be cheaper built now though like everything else.

I like the folding camp chairs from Academy. They are big and heavy with the steel tubes but they last and sit pretty good.

Got absolutely everything I need. Morning poop coffee holder and a table for my breakfast. Might need a little more cushion.
