I’ve got a big beautiful ‘99 GMC Suburban waiting for a fresh rebuild. Big boy with the 454. Thing is a beast that gets 10-11 mpg towing or not towing. 42 gallon tank. Nightmare to fill up right about now but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Just something about a big ole chunk of old metal running around trails is strangely satisfying. 454 is pretty awesome off-road too.

There's nothing like a big block. I always wanted a 2001-2006 with the Vortec 8100. So awesome.

Ya know I test drove a couple a few years back. I honestly prefer the 454. I know the engines are very similar but the 7400 just felt better. Throttle response and driving was just better feeling to me. Not that they are sporty by any means but the 454 won me over.

Hmmm….the question for me would be, two extra years from when? My point is, say if you financed the gladiator for 5 years and you’ve already paid down 2 years, then start with a new 7 year loan (based on the same payment 5+2 years for the Ram) that’s considerable outlay for the new vehicle. I’m just trying to fathom what a “same payment” scenario would look like on a $80k plus truck. Just wondering that’s all because I’ve seen the sticker prices on the Rams, especially the 2500 Ram, and “they ain’t cheap” compared to a late model Gladiator. You can just give me an eye roll if you want; just my wandering thoughts. But of course it would depend on the model (Big Horn vs Rebel for example).

I traded my 06 mega cab 2500 Cummins for the Gladiator at wife's insistance... mileage went up, cost per gallon on fuel went down... now I no longer have anywhere near to space nor a shell but its way easier to park .... the dodge did run 34 or 35 tires stock and towed like a tug boat but like I said. Not near as easy to park...

Now my 01 cummins.... I wish I had it back...

For reference, my new Jeep with the 3.6 is doing a hand calculated 16 MPG on my weekly mix of city/highway driving. This is pretty much where every JL and JT with the 3.6 I've ever had landed.

My ’24 Ram 2500 CC 4x4 with the Cummins on the 33” tires sees 18-19 MPG on the same driving circuit. It gets 13 MPG towing my 26’ camper. And it gets 10 MPG towing my 14,000 GVWR equipment trailer with equipment loaded. So yes, the Ram is considerably more fuel efficient. However, diesel is $1 per gallon more, so the monthly fuel costs between the Ram and the Jeep are similar. The Ram when unloaded actually rides very good, nearly as good as the Jeep. It’s more spacious inside, comfortable, and quiet. It steers and handles like a dream compared to the Jeep. It’s a pretty nice vehicle and would serve very well for a daily driver.

The reason I have both is because they are two different use cases. The Jeep excels when we want to hit trail systems. The Ram excels at hauling all of our stuff plus the Jeep to the trail systems.

I won’t judge. I own an old 5.9 Cummins and will never sell it. The gladiator is way more fun and actually more useful unless a need to tow a huge trailer. I find that I rarely need to tow big…so it makes more sense for me to have an old 2500 and a newer (very reliable) small pickup for 90% of my use. But that’s just me.

I own my original 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4, 5.9L diesel, crew cab short bed, and the '23 Gladiator Rubicon. Guess which one sits the most? (it's the diesel).
Whoever told you a gas 2500 was going to get the same mileage as the smaller, lighter Gladiator was just having a slow sales day.

Funny that’s exactly what I have a non modified 06 4x4 cummins crew shortbed I bought new…wish they still made them. It’s crazy that I get better mileage from a 20 year old 3/4 truck than a 3 year old gladiator. I had a 22 ford 7.3 gasser…yeah not so much on gas. Great truck though pulled great drives great, just don’t need two big trucks. Unfortunately with the complexity of the new diesels I won’t be buying one again…
