Agree it's an old school safety feature. If you aren't folding flat, headrest is one more thing between whatever's in the bed and the noggins in the cab. The roof ain't stoppin a flying rock hammer, but a headrest might.
I believe the main reasoning for headrest is whiplash protection.

The ridgeline is not a truck. But I do plan on removing the headrests permanently.
It's not a normal truck. I'd like to know the % of 1/2 ton owners who have never towed 5,000 lbs with their truck.

Absolutely. Maybe it's both. Like rock hammers, or wood, or the spare. Or a dog. If I'm in backseat with no top, and anything is in the bed, and we are going any faster than 25, I want the rest upright behind my head. I like my one remaining brain cell

I had a friend die 15 years ago when the full size van she was driving in went into a snowy ditch and a trailer ball rolling around in the back of the van ended up striking her in the head. She died from blunt force trauma. That's right, a trailer ball found its way under or up and over two separate bench seats then missed the captains chair back and head rest Area then hit her head. =(

Don't drive around with loose objects in your vehicle.

Yep. this thing is a truck too. Lots of truck issues to consider. Like a cooler full of frozen comes open mid hill descent, or an antler shifts. Tree branches tearing off the ties. Could get dicey. I also wear life jacket when sleeping on a boat, so count that in. Lol

80% of 1/2 ton drivers never user their truck to its fullest. The ridgeline would be plenty truck for most. Lol

In looking at the rear seat flipped up, it looks like all the weight of somebody sitting on the seat would held up by the seat hinge, because the seat bottom is floating? Those must be super strong hinges.
I just snapped pictures from a video and from these 2 pictures it clearly looks like the rear seats may be sitting on top of the underseat box. The gap between the seats and the box looks like it may be 1/4 inch tops. And as we all know the box is designed to be removed completely. So what else could support the weight of people sitting on the seats when the box is removed other than hinges that are super strong? I got no clue. But I do scratch my head and wonder.

I think the seat support is here:

Makes sense. Great catch. Looking closely at the attached picture I see some little square areas with what looks like a mesh in them and I guess that these could be the supports. Can only see 3 of the 4 of them in this picture. I drew a yellow line leading to them. Mystery may now be solved. Thanks

Just as an FYI all full size trucks have fold up rear seats that are supported at the hinge and not the floorboard. That’s literally the last thing anyone needs to worry about.
