I was typing out a longer reply, but I'll skip it for a condensed version.

Haven't drove a Tesla, haven't even sat it one. Not in the market, I am sure the tech is amazing (I do mean that).

I like what I like, and I know that its not always in line with big car manufacturers, or a lot of other things for that matter. That's fine. What manufacturers do make sense for them. I know. I work for one.

So I adapt to fit my needs / desires now, not what they are trying to accomplish now for the future.
And that is as fair as it gets. All product and services providers are in the business of making money or they will be out of business. They all try very hard to build the products AND the roadmap for future generations of their product based on consumer demand and acceptance. But all of this is based on percentages of the population and projections. And, in the end there is no way to make 100% of the population happy and everyone gets to make their choices based on their own needs, real or perceived.

But I can also say with absolute conviction from MY experience having driven a LOT of cars all the way from the 70s to now that nostalgia and personal perception excluded, we have MUCH better automobiles nowadays. I sat in my buddy's pristine '58 Corvette convertible because he offered to let me drive it in a local parade for fun, and this car was one of my bucket list cars for years!!! The reality that immediately sank in when I dropped into that seat and banged my knee so hard I said some words that I probably should not have, is that the darn thing is a highly uncomfortable death trap and if I had to drive one for more than an hour I'd commit suicide. And to wrap up my point, I've owned 5 Jeeps from 2004 through now, and every one of them was more reliable and comfortable than the one before.

I can agree with vehicles now vs then.

A friend of mine is big into classics. All of his projects are from the 70s.

I personally care very little for them. They were not well particularly well built or well designed, generally unsafe compared to modern vehicles, and for the most part performed and drove terribly in comparison. Fun to look at it and see where we came from.

Heck, I have a stepside pickup from 1993 rotting in the yard right now. I've had a hard time circling back to it as it offers me nothing that my 2015 Camaro or my 2022 Gladiator doesn't do better.

Now, I find something like my 2015 to be a wonderful mid point. New and comfortable and has all of the usual amenities - 'old enough' to be somewhat easy to diagnose and repair, with lots of information and parts now available. I suppose that why I really like 'enthusiast' vehicles. They tend to survive time better. Via parts, information, or both...I guess that's really what makes the age and type on that car good...

I've got a different version of UConnect than you, but on mine, a simple press of the voice button on the wheel activates the UConnect stuff while a long press activates Android Auto stuff.
Brother, you're my hero! That works perfectly; you get a Gold Star! Thank you!

Don't mean to start an Apple vs. Android war and not very helpful to the OP but "Hey Siri" works like a champ with phone, emails, texts, and even Amazon Music with no buttons needed. That's difference between a tightly controlled development ecosystem of Apple CarPlay and an open source platform, and something to think about for folks buying a new truck/phone.
I agree with all of that. My first mobile phone was a Motorola w/android OS. I’m a system engineer and I know how important software security updates are especially in this hacker active world. After a period of time with no software updates available for my android phone I gave up and bought my first iPhone 7 with updates since. Software, in particular security patch updates, are constant for IOS and in my mind that gives the user a sense that Apple cares about user security. In summary, in my opinion, android’s open architecture vs IOS closed architecture is like using a sieve vs. a closed tight pickle jar. Others may have different opinions and/or preferences because there are a lot of android users out there, but that’s my experience.

With all the issues this current JT has with UConnect, and the large amount of miles that gets put on, my experience has been more pleasurable with it turned off completely.
  • If nav is needed, on or off road, the phone by itself gets it done.
  • If music is wanted, I sing. Much to the chagrin of the dog, or anyone else in the Jeep.
Turning the Infotainment system off has decreased the frustration level, while increasing situational awareness and the number of show tunes I've learned. ;)

Next project is cancelling the WiFi Hotspot, and pulling Jeep's cell chip. Then building a bracket over the screen to hang an old InReach SE, Ham radio mic and cell phone. :)
Maybe a clip for sheet music. The Sound Of Music has too many songs to memorize.

We are a global telecom provider deal with a lot of proprietary and sensitive info and we don’t allow Android phones for internal corporate use.

Yup. Encryption and privacy features should be required across the board but only IOS offers that from an enclosed architecture perspective. Android offers similar features but don’t seem to be as robust.

I have always used Android, and my wife has always used Apple. Yet, somehow, we've still been married for 23 years...

My personal phone is an Android and my work phone is an iPhone.

I still don't know how to use the iPhone.

Had a customer want to air drop me some photos and I politely handed him the phone and said 'You got that' 😂

That’s a common theme among people that prefer one phone operating system over another; familiarity. I have an older sister than won’t change from android to iOS even though she keeps getting bombarded with malware! Thus I’m very careful about opening up anything she sends to me. Sometimes you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.😏 For me, I was exposed to several operating systems in college, and in the service. My first calculator was an HP that used reverse Polish notation (RPN), so I was flexible and adapted well. I’ve used old card readers, compilers, and bit toggles on system interfaces. The bottom line for me was/is which OS is the most secure, provides the most privacy and solid end to end encryption? The iPhone wins hands down. But if android is what you’re comfortable with, and you don’t care as much about the tightness of the device operating system then that’s ok also.

I flat out refuse to switch my personal phone. I am comfortable with the Google atmosphere and whatever risks that entails.

It's not that I think anything is inherently wrong with the iPhone (it's not that deep to me) - I'm just not relearning this part of my life right now, lol.

I also don't depend on my work phone so heavily that I need to stress about it / combining ecosystems. Other than answering calls, text messages, and occasionally emailing from the Outlook app - it's just a weight on my desk.

Oh hell, that's why I divorced my first wife! I got tired of being her tech support person. My current one is an Apple fan. 🤣

I live in an Apple ecosystem at work and home. All the "smart" TV's in the market come with Google OS installed. The first thing I do when I buy a new TV is buy an Apple TV 4K for it and put the factory TV remote in a drawer someplace. It wakes up, configures itself and I'm done.

My desk MAC is my house server and everyone in my house has at least one iPhone and one iPad. My wife is in the website management and graphics business and you could not pay her to use anything but her MacBook Pro for her work. My company gives me a free Dell laptop every year which is so saddled up with layers of restrictions and locks to avoid hacking and viruses that it's barely usable. I do all my work on my MAC (which has NEVER experienced a virus or hack) and then email my files to the DELL when they are done. did I mention I HATE MICROSOFT WITH A PASSION THAT BURNS AT HELL TEMPERATURES!!! 🤣

Not gonna lie I am flying by the seat of my pants with my Windows 11 gaming PC (and laptop) with only Windows built in virus protection keeping it safe.

Thank goodness I at least have been trained to death at work on how to recognize scam files and emails and links and stuff. So there's that 😂

I have had pretty minimal trouble - but I'm also not ripping music off torrents anymore like I might have did as a teenager.
