What the hell?! I actually did go over them last night when I got home. Only 4 or five of them even moved, out of 96. Meaning 89 of them just clicked at 20 ft lbs and I didn’t move them. Do they need to be off the jeep and on the ground, or just aired down to 10 or so?When you do go to check the bolts please make sure to air down the tire first. It's unlikely but I saw a guy get both his leg bones open fractured by a ring he over tightened that was full pressure. Caused a chain reaction of bolts shearing and the ring caused some serious damage.
Just air them down to 10 or so and then fill it back up after your done and yeah that sounds about right that almost all off them click at 20.What the hell?! That's a scary story, it got me thinking, if one was lazy and didn't want to air down, maybe a few ratch straps around the tire dividing it into pie slices could add a little extra safety to hold the ring in place if things go south.When you do go to check the bolts please make sure to air down the tire first. No that's normal the bead itself settles I've found. If you have to continuously add torque I'd be more concerned but it's normal to have to retorque a couple here and there as the bead settles and the bolts do their initial minimal stretch.Thanks very much. They’re all brand new grade 8, directly from the wheel manufacturer. My guess is the rubber just relaxed half a millimeter. They only took about half a turn.It might have just been missed in the torque sequence.... OR they stretched, at which point they need replacing with new
That has always amazed me when G8 is spec'd. A 37" tire on a 17" rim at 40 psi would exert about 40k# on the bead, which could be held by a half-dozen 5/16" G8 bolts. I get the reason for 40 of them... the seal, but why still spec G8? It would look a lot cooler with stainless! But then we'd have galvanic action on the aluminum rim..AHHH! TITANIUM! 24 per wheel. 48 holes in each wheel though, just in case someone screws up. I like that they’re 8. The zinc coating alone. The shop owner I bought them from had clear zinc bolts. Looked awful I thought. 6 bolts would only hold it with a tool hardened steel ring though. Aluminum is too soft for gaps between bolts.That has always amazed me when G8 is spec'd.
