I really liked my dad's old chevy station wagon that had dual action tailgate, where you could open it flat down or outward to the side. I always wondered why mid level trucks not doing it. Well wonder no more, Honda Ridgeline did exactly that - dual action tailgate. I think it adds purpose and convenience. With the gate opening outward, you can reach things farther in the bed. However, most important for me is to easily let my dog jump up into the bed without getting any extra ladders, etc. And yet at the same time if I have a long load of lumber or bike, you can put gate flat down.

Jeep, why was it so hard to add this piece of convenience?

Any ideas if this will be possible to do with aftermarket parts or new gate?

Sounds like a Ridgeling better suits your needs.

The direction the tailgate opens would have no effect on the load height of the truck bed, your dog still needs to be able to jump the same height.

I guess but its like what 4 inches wide and an inch or two lower not the best step stool for a dog. Id just get a better dog. /s
My current bumper on JK for instance have a dip with the little lip in the middle which makes it good 4 inches lower.

I have a ‘08 Ridgeline and am buying a Gladiator and can say that I will 100% miss not having the dual-action tailgate. However, Honda’s Gen 2 Ridgeline is no match for the Gladiator in a multitude of ways so I’m foregoing the two-way tailgate for everything else the Gladiator offers. I’d be stoked if Jeep adds the dual-action tailgate in the future. BTW... there’s already a thread about this here somewhere.

If I even thought about Honda truck, I probably would not be on this forum, don't you think?
I was wondering similar things just yesterday as I was watching a # of the new RIVIAN Truck videos . . . one of the design engineers showing the multi function tailgate. This Expensive plug-in (before Gov't Incentives) has a tailgate that has 3-postions; closed open flat, or open all the way down (vertical). this 3rd position, All The Way Down, is Simple, Functional & "cool" ! The JEEP engineers need to add that in 2020 for the Gladiator. The JL's, with the spare on the door, not possible, and not really needed . However, IF RIVIAN were to be able to add the swing open position . . . NOW they would have the option of adding a flip down table, like many of the JL owners do .
Not to hijack this thread, but if I had a place to plug it in, that Rivian is Very Appealing to me, but I digress, back to this thread. The only door I think is really really stupid-silly, is the GMC one, but again, just my opinion, so don't tar & feather me over it ! :giggle: :)

Not really . . . Glad-Forum folks, for the most part, enjoy a little "bantering" about the so-called "competition" ! It can even get downright "nasty," but usually once the dust settles, MOST of us see "the light" and we all share a beer - just one beer amongst us all ! Which is why we all carry a few anti-infection (germ) packets around - quick wipe of the mouth and we're good to go ! A few more Posts and perhaps a Thread or 2 and we'll be inviting you to join in too !         . . . . . . . . .

Um, not if it can use bumper as support to jump up.
So Many options here it's "crazy," if you have or can add a hitch mount ! Petco or any other pet friendly store - even North40 stores, carry "steps" that plug in to the hitch. Even works for "old folks" with arthritis !

Hm, must be me, but after having JK for 8 years, I can't think of any other vehicle for a good offroading, camping, etc. I had Toyota Tacoma crew cab, but before it was size of Tundra and would never get IFS vehicle for offroad purposes.
