We always pay cash for everything too. You should see how people look at me when I roll up in my Cherokee with the faded paint and rusty hood. I do it on purpose now.
The thing is that a lot of people want what they want and they will do whatever to get it. THAT is what a salesperson is looking for. They don’t want tire kickers or informed educated people who will take their time to make a wise decision. If I were you I would take the persons a-holeness as a compliment that you’re not just an easy commission. Don’t take bad experiences as personal insults because you are ,( insert your group here.). You can see by the other comments that this stuff happens to everyone, even me, a 48 year old white guy. As a little background I am a Physician Assistant and I am blessed and my wife is a senior project manager at Vanderbilt Medical Center, we each give 10% to Church, 15% in our 401k and still do whatever we want.

I have that happen to me all the time. Mostly because I’m young and everyone thinks I can’t afford expensive items. I make it a point to give my business to those that don’t pre judge me when I show up.

Thanks! That's a great way to look at it!! My background: senior software engineer, community leader, 29, look young, dress kinda like a tomboy hiker person. :)

I'm a little disappointed to see all these old white dudes telling a young female that she misread a situation that they weren't there to witness. Y'all need to check yourselves. Being experienced doesn't mean shit if you can't examine your own biases.

How do you know everyone here is white? I’m not.

Could've been left out. I'm just basing that on the few people who bothered to mention it. You certainly don't have to be white to be sexist.

It was the way it was phrased. He didn't even ask if I wanted to buy it, just assumed I wasn't going to buy it and that I needed to look at the cheaper options. Had he asked if I was going to buy it, what price range I was looking for, etc... and then said no you can't test drive yet, I wouldn't be upset... but don't assume. As I said in my post, I can afford a 60k rubicon, no problem. But given my age and that I am a woman, some people just assume the opposite.
If it happened to you because you are a young woman then why did it happen to me? And many others here who are neither young or a woman. It happens to everyone so don’t take it personal.

You also don’t have to be a male to be sexist or ageist.
I'm with you homie. Only reason I bothered at all is people came in saying I'm a guy and this happened to me so your experience isn't special or noteworthy. It's like the definition of mansplaining, which is a stupid word for a real thing that we just witnessed. The only person here who knows what happened is OP. I'm only concerned that there are people trying to say she misinterpreted the situation as if they know better.

if you are 29 your dad is probably pretty close to my age. I bet when you tell him your story he will have a similar experience too. I am of the opinion that if someone can't treat me with a reasonable amount of respect then I will do business with someone who will. There really is nothing new under the sun, the names and faces change but people's behavior remains constant. Look back through history there are literally hundreds of examples of people disrespecting others, it is just the way it is. Keep your chin up and go to work tomorrow and act like it never happened. Or if you really want to make a statement go back to that dealership when you buy your Gladiator and request a different salesman. Just make sure to say hi to the a-hole so he knows how stupid he is.

Thanks! I don't mind hearing stories of craptastic salesman experiences to men, in fact, it does help to know I'm not the only one. I do mind being told I misinterpreted the situation, but not need to argue over it. Thanks for sticking up for me. :)

Haha, my Dad is only 51. :)

Thanks for the insight. I will definitely take this as a learning experience.

A few years back I was shopping for a new GMC Yukon. I started talking about getting a better price on a Yukon I liked. The salesman looked down his nose and said. "You should shop down the street at the Chevy dealer" and walked off. You get good and bad, gotta learn to roll with it.
