Hello guys i know this might sound like a slightly dumb question but,i was curious if can can run like a 6 inch lift shock i.e a king 6 inch shock for a 6 inch lift and i was asking if i could use that using a 3 inch lift cause im saving up for a rock krawler pro x suspension kit for my JT but yeah if you guys can give me some info on this id appreciate it :D

Edit-Sorry for the very little info, after what renegade said i forgot to mention this. I will be going with some longer brake lines (stainless steel) some beefier driveshafts from adams driveshafts and also limiting straps but im not quite sure if i really want to go with that if i actually need it and lastly i might run some acos pro adjustable coil spacers, and for tires i might want to go with some 35's as well

Keep in mid these are For the front
specs on the 6 inch, lift King shocks
Compressed 19.13"
Extended is 30.96
Travel 11.83

For the 3.5" Lift, king shocks are:
Compressed 18.11"
Extended:28.87"
Travel 10.76

THE REAR SHOCK LENGTHS
6 inch lift,King shock specs
Compressed:21"
Extended:32.47"
Travel 11.47

2.5 to 5" Lift King shocks
Compressed:19.24"
Extended:20.25
Travel:11.1"

Usually not because the shock could bottom out with a smaller lift. I'd recommend you save up and buy parts at the same time.

Another route is to get shock extensions, where you use your stock shocks, extend those and run a 3inch lift with stock shocks. This is what the cheaper spacer lifts do https://www.quadratec.com/p/daystar/2-spacer-lift-kit-jeep-gladiator-jt

Well, the exact answer to your question is maybe. In a Jeep you really want droop in your suspension to really get that good flex. You only need maybe 2 inches or so up up travel on your shocks during most normal driving. We are not talking about racing Baja here. I think a lot of lift manufacturers supply shocks with their lifts that are too short. On my last Jeep I put my own suspension together using several different manufacturers components. Once it was together I measured and picked some shocks that only had that 2 to 3 inches when sitting level. So you will need to know the compressed length of the shocks you want and the distance between the mounting points with the shorter lift installed.

Thanks for the info man, also the compressed length of the king shock for a supposed 6 inch lift is 19.13" and the and the extended lenght is 30.96inches,and the travel length is 11.83'' and thats for the front,so do you think i could run that with some jks coil spacers as well for a total lift of 3 inches

I went back over my previous stuff and I think I was running about 4 inches of up travel. That said, I can't answer your question because I don't know what the dimension is with a 3 inch lift. You might be ok. But I expect that the suggested size for the King shocks will be better than the average lift that probably puts your shock in the center of it's stroke. A quick check would be to measure the distance now and add 3 inches. Assuming the lift is a true 3 inches.

This just means that the shock would completely collapse before the suspension since it is longer.

You risk damaging the new shocks and ruining your ride because there isn’t enough suspension up travel, and ripping off your brake lines and driveshaft contact under droop. Why are you considering shocks that are too long for the lift exactly?

Here are some quick rough measurements for reference. Stock front suspension (Rubicon) up travel is around 4” (with winch). The stock shocks are almost 16” collapsed.

Maximum collapsed front shock lengths are generally as follows:
Stock: 16.25”

2” lift (using 2” bump stop spacer): 18.25”

3” lift (if 3” bump stop is used): 19.25”

Given these rough dimensions, and the stated collapsed shock length, those Kings actually might work on a 3” lift, assuming you take appropriate actions to prevent brake line overextension and driveline contact.

On my JK I was running RK 1.5 coils with 1/2 inch spacers and 3 inch bumpstops. I was able to run Fox 2.0 4-6 inch shocks with no issues, losing an inch of uptravel to gain 3 inches of downtravel is a pretty good deal. My brakelines were adjusted and I ran coil spring retainers. You can do it if you know what length to set things up for

On my JK I ran 6in lift shocks on a 2.5 lift.
37s on a low center of gravity kit means not much up travel room anyway.
