Clunk going onto reverse

When ever I go from park to reverse there is a loud clunk. Anyone else notice this?

I only really notice it as I am about to back out the driveway. I think the sound bounces off the garage door and makes it sound louder.

Back in The day I would have thought the U joints were bad but I highly doubt this is the case. I have about 11,000 miles on it.

I'm not sure how the mechanism works that shifts the transmission, but I believe this is what I hear.

Any opinions?

It happens to me, but only when I start the truck and put it right into gear. If you let it warm up for a second, it doesn't happen, for me at least...

We can’t be the only ones that experience this.

If mine sits in the garage overnight, regardless of the temperature, the engine will go to high idle, 1500 rpm, for what I believe to be an unusually long time. I would guess well over a minute. I never remember to time it until I start it…

If I wait until the idle is below 1000 rpm, it doesn’t “clunk”. Could this be the torque converter?? Something to do with building fluid pressure?? Just thinking out loud.
I’m not interested in getting underneath it and asking my wife to put it in gear ?

Mine does it when cold, or parked on an incline. I always remote start so the cab is more comfortable, which gives it time to idle down and warm up a little. I find that the clunk is not as bad if I put it in Neutral, then Drive, and then in Reverse.

Is the floor you park on level? Does the weight of the truck roll to the front or the back when parked on the garage floor?

Next time, when you roll in to park and your foot is on the brake and you put it in Park, engage the parking brake and see what happens next time.

I don't know the cause, but my understanding is that it is related to the tension on the parking pawl. It is 'normal' in that it happens in many Gladiators with no noted negative effects.

Concur with Maximus Gladius - I have to park on an incline and I was getting the “clunk”. I determined that it was due to the Jeep rolling back slightly and resting on the transmission rather than the parking brake.
I now shift into neutral, then set the parking brake, making sure it is resting on the brake rather than the transmission before shifting into park.
I have never had the “clunk” since.

I'll be damned! The clunk was driving me nuts and I figured it was the ball joints. My driveway is on an incline. Starting doing this and no more clunking. Whats weird is that it would clunk when I would pull into the driveway as well and occasionally when I would go over a bump slow but for some reason it's not happening now. No idea why but I'll go with it! Thanks for this thread.

Park Brake On or Park Brake OFF
Start engine and lot it go through the high idle routine for one minute thirty seconds and settle down to normal idle…. that usually prevents the loud clunk.
Occasionally I can start it and immediately shift to reverse and it doesn’t clunk, park brake on or off doesn’t matter however, this morning I tried the start-shift-R and CLUNK!!! Probably woke up the cat it’s so loud.
I don’t believe it is normal because I’ve never had another vehicle do it.
I need to check the transmission fluid level again and see if it is sufficient. Does the torque converter need transmission fluid pressure to build???
