Found this thread after hearing some metal-to-metal sound following my 3.5 Overland Plus install. Seems like the isolator issue will definitely help the issue, but I have a quick question before ordering.

Anyone who tried this solution also run Airlift bags? Had the bags on my stock springs & helped with towing our TT, but Airlift calls for removal of the isolators to be able to fit the bags.

I've considered air bags, but haven't heard much support given the longer springs on the 3.5" lifts. Are you currently running bags?

I haven’t installed the bags yet after the lift, but I’ve seen others on the forums & FB groups claim that the longer ones work well with lifts. I believe they’re the ones made for the Ram 1500.

Damn I am glad I found this thread, I couldn't for the life of me figure out this noise. I still have my stock rear springs laying around, so hopefully I can grab the isolators off of those to solve this issue.

@Clayton Off Road I am surprised these still are not included in the kit more than a year out from when this was originally posted. I have a rtt on a bed rack and my spare (300+ lbs of constant load), so being weightless over the rear doesn't seem to be the issue as posited earlier. Having a friend bounce the rear up and down, it really looks like more than just the very top of the spring is contacting itself, the entire soft portion of the upper coil looks to be hitting each other causing a loud metallic slinky-like sound.

I'll know more when my installer gets it on the lift this Friday.

Hey Nick, for whatever reason this has only been an issue for a small percentage of the thousands of JT kits we have sold. The isolators solve the problem completely, so we have since started including in kits a note to re-use the factory isolators while we work on getting our instructions officially updated and switched over across the board :like:

Hey guys, thanks for the reply! I just got back from the shop where we put on the stock isolators, and it’s completely solved the noise. So I think you’ve got it right, updating the instructions to use the stock ones is a good choice. Worth noting that after we had got back from our test drive, another Clayton JT came in for something else and asked what we were doing. Told him, and he replied he’s been having the same issue. He was happy to know all he needed to fix it as well was his stock isolators.

Anyways, thanks for the reply. Definitely give the Clayton kit a 10/10

Sorry to revive this old thread, but is this the noise you guys are referring to? AEV 2.5" Standard Duty coil lift here, but I don't have any weight in the rear and these coils are designed for 200lbs of weight. One video is with no shocks and the other is with the Bilstein 8100 XPs. Thanks!

Yeah, that sounds pretty close to what I heard.

Thank you, I still have the factory coils with isolators. I’ll swap the isolators over and report back. I’m pretty sure mine are making noise where the top section the coils touch with the next middle section of coils.

I am having that noise over speed bumps over a certain speed. Sounds like the rear is going to fall out! I have the AEV 2.5" lift, 5100s, and standard springs. I was under it last lift smacking stuff with a dead blow hammer to try and get something to resonate. The only noises I got was from the spare tire heat shield, and the metal piece that sits below the tailgate, they is a plastic piece with wires that rattles. But nothing gave me a definite conclusion. Everything has been retorqued as well after install.

Have you tried jumping up and down on your rear bumper? That's how a shop was able to duplicate my sound.

I threw on the factory rubber isolators where the top tightly wound section meets the next bottom section of coil. I let the axle droop a little to expose that last tightly wound coil. Took it on the trail this past weekend for 4.5hrs and 30miles over all kinds of terrain. Quiet as a church mouse. This problem has been plagueing me for six months and now it’s resolved. If you don’t have the factory isolators you could try loading the bed as the standard duty AEV coils are designed for at least 200lbs back there. I don’t have that weight all the time back there just when I load up for camping and I haven’t really taken it out because of this issue.

P.S. During trouble shooting I have been able to replicate it going over a curb. I noticed the noise the most during those square obstacles or high shaft speed/quick events; not washboard or high slow flex events.
