Should always try to avoid trying to tow/pull something stuck in reverse. While your reverse gear has a better ratio, the issue comes from putting force on the coast side of the gears in your differentials . The ramp of the coast gear can cause the gears to try push apart and can break teeth
I never thought of that, but that makes a LOT of sense. The burning clutch was my excuse for buying a winch in case that happens again ;) Now I have an even better excuse!

Better ratio? Not sure about the manuals in these but holy cow, every manual I've ever had the R ratio was something a lot higher than low was. In my car's T5 you had better be prepared when letting out the clutch in reverse and it's FAST. I think it's closer to 2nd gear than low. I've never had a manual where reverse was as low as 1st gear. I'd never try to pull anything in reverse simply because it's always been geared too high compared to low.
Maybe these are different but I often turn vehicles around rather than try to back up my driveway due to the high R ratio.
Stupid high ratio for reverse is what helps burn clutches. I have no idea why in the last decades manual transmissions have been made this way.

I only burned mine once (in my JL) towing a minivan out of a ditch in reverse (so I could see it). Smelled for 2 days... Should have thought about using 4LO to reduce the amount of slipping I had to do... when offroading in 4LO I hardly even have to use the skinny pedal, I just let out the clutch and go!
Off-road, 4LO, the thing is a mountain goat. But similar to you, we pulled a (very small) stump in 4L/reverse in the JK. It required 0 throttle input. The way it was situated, we had no choice but to use reverse. But it was tiny. The jeep didn't even know it was there. We only used L to avoid burning clutch. We were successful.

I'm telling ya, if they'd have put a proper reverse gear in this thing along with a proper clutch, you'd never hear a peep out of me in regards to complaining. Reverse is just ridiculous.
What are the odds there are two Austin's on this forum from "Central Ohio" both with 6MT's???

well, i am now in need of a clutch. i pulled out of the driveway and turned the corner and shifted to third and the weirdest noise stated to happen, i push in the clutch and it went away. let the clutch back out and the noise came back. looked at rpm and it was over 4000 with truck slowing down. i did order the centerforce clutch back in october and i can wait a month for it.

I have one on order as well, but it will be a while before it gets installed. Waiting to see if Gobi comes back this year. So I’m stockpiling parts, Mopar beadlock capable rims already waiting.

Yikes! Sorry to hear. I hope you can get yours soon. It’s sooo much better. Quadratec is showing February 15 estimated shipping date. Good luck!

Tell us about your clutch history. Was it defective or just worn out. How many miles, what kind of use etc.

i believe it is worn out. i have just under 26000 miles on the clutch and have been off-roading with the vehicle 4 times in just over 2 years. i am going to start the teardown in 2 weekends so that when the Centerforce clutch comes in, i can do the install and be back on the road.

Clutch recall done? If so, at how many miles? It seems that if you put some miles on it before the recall, you'd have a case to make jeep pay for it. Of course, they'd just put another OE in, though, so this is a great chance to upgrade.

the recalls were done at 7,000 miles and 12,000 miles. if i have Jeep do the fix, they would put in the OE and that is not what i want done.
