I agree. At byway speeds a kayak will easily kill and change your life forever. The roof gutters are fragil.
Only reason I would disagree with this statement is that mopar sells a factory roof rack cross bar setup for the wrangler and gladiator rated to 150lbs. If the roof rain rails could not support this I highly doubt that mopar would offer such a product.

A Pair Mopar's Roof Rack system for the new 2018-2021 JL Wranglers and 2020-2021 JT Gladiator with the factory hard top. The 82215387AB Roof Rack system mounts directly into your JL Wrangler's hard top rain gutters. The bars come with a black powder coated finish and have a T-Slot design that allows them to accept a variety of carriers to take your gear along with you on your on and off-road adventures. Fits all Thule rack attachments. Rated for 150 lbs. Item # 82215387AB (Replaces Item # 82215387)

If that’s accurate I stand corrected. I was under the impression it was closer to 80lbs, so for small items mostly. And I just briefly looked it up. My apologies, and thanks for correcting my mistake. I see it rated for 150 as well, the source in this case thule. That confirms the mopar numbers. Very cool. I now have a bit more confidence in these.

Just as a note, mopar does state that it should not be mounted to the front removable freedom panels. I noticed a few photos in here of people mounting them this way and I personally would not trust the front panels to support much if any weight.

@JcrOffroad makes a full roof rack and half rack. I recommend the half.
I've seen the JCR racks and they are nice, and yes the half is better (IMHO) so you can still open your freedom panels

I could be wrong, but a lot of roof rack companies rate their load capacities around 160# statically (Thule, Yakima, Rhino Rack, etc.), and I would think that might have something to do with NHTSA guidelines or something like that.

I mean, roofs will hold a lot of weight, statically. Think roll-overs. If roofs couldn't hold a significant amount of weight, wouldn't all vehicles in roll-overs be flattened?

Thule, btw, has amended some of their mountings, specifically regarding installing items on factory roof rails (found under the roof top tent info).
A rooftop tent works on vehicles with crossbars, siderails, gutters, tracks and roofs with fixed points (as shown below). But do not mount your tent on factory installed crossbars or siderails that came with your car since they often won’t be able to handle the load.

Very true. Mine are mounted at the widest spread on the rear section only.

The MOPAR crossbars have the specs for mounting on either a JT or a JL. I just finished a trip with a 10’ kayak on one side and a (very light) road bike on the other. Around town I take off the kayak and bike mounting hardware but leave the crossbars on.

Bestop Sunrider works great, by the way (not with kayak mounted, of course!).

Mine too. It just barely rests on the front cross bar when it’s open. Here’s a tangent. What kind of road bike. :)

No kayak but 2 100w solar panels on a set of roof rails. The single one that I had on first was using T bolt in slots, currently with 1/4 bolts though the rails. Possibly more potential for air lifting force than kayak. 2 20 in wide Ɨ 50in long panels. (???)

A 2016 62cm Trek Emonda SLR - just over 16 lbs ready to ride. Normally though would carry a gravel bike that is a 20 couple lbs.

Nice. 2017 Trek Domane SL7 for me. Not as light as yours, but pretty close. I love that ISOspeed though. I put lighter wheels on and it’s amazing.

Nice! I ride a 2019 cannondale super six evo. First bike I finally sprung for nice wheels on and what a difference it made.

The Domane are sexy bikes. Always love the aerodynamics that trek uses.

I’m terrible at gravel but did my first gravel race a few months ago. What are you riding on gravel? I’m currently on an older Trek Crocket.

Very nice. Wheels make it a different bike. I love the domane. It’s not the lightest, but soaks up the bumps like no other. I haven’t gone down the gravel rabbit hole yet. Too much money spent on the jeep. :)
