My niece is graduating college next week and taking a job in California. What are the financial implications of buying a new car and registering it in NH (no sales tax) and transferring the title to.California? Would she be better off buying new when she gets to California?

Either way you still pay sales tax. Same thing in Oregon. Purchase in Oregon register it wherever you reside. Sales tax. Not sure if purchased in NH and registered there. Then reregister in Cali would be any different. I imagine it would be.

I think as long as it first gets registered in nh where you currently reside then move to California after you won't pay ca sales tax on it. At least that's how it worked when I brought my car from Florida to mn.

I would tag it in NH and have her drive it in Cali. I don’t know boo about NH fees but I bet they’re less.
Tons of people here driving around with plates from other states. I wouldn’t worry about it.
And she won’t have to get it smogged here.

Biggest concern is if she will have to pay sales tax again when registering in California.. NH is no sales tax and very low fees. Not sure if cars sold in NH meet California emissions standards. Maine, Vermont and Mass do.

I would keep the vehicle registered in NH.

We are under policed and if they do stop you for it you can easily rectify by registering in CA at that time.

Do not register anything in CA if you can avoid it.

Emissions plus california shows a new vehicle as any under 8000 miles or 2 model years old and will try to charge you sales tax even when transferring. Its really really really about the worst possible place to live.

but I dont get any snow so thats cool.

As @californiajeeping said if it is 'new' you will still pay California Sales Tax (BTW-registration in CA is super high). But you only pay the difference in the tax sales tax rate from what you paid in the prior state. So LA at 9.75% moving from NH at 0.0% you would own 9.75%,, for say NJ at 6.625%, you would own 3.125% tax to California.
Might be worth trying to keep the NH plates until it 2+ years/ 8000+ old ?

If you have a brand new Ferrari with Montana plates, you will have attention, or Oregon plates and you have been parking at the same address for the last year in Eureka, yup, or you get pulled over with your brand new California driver's license driving a NH JT in your name, busted.

Registration for the first year on my 2022 gladiator diesel (48k msrp) was around $700.

FOR A YEAR!

What will it be the next year? In pa we pay taxes, title&tags, and registration at purchase time. But then after that, for trucks, it's $91 per year on trucks, and $38 per year on cars.

So for a 48k gladiator. We'd pay $2880 in taxes (6%) + title ($58) and registration ($91) the first year.

After that, just registration every year @ $91.

Can you talk her out of the job? Traffic sucks, crime can be pretty bad in places, rent is expensive, gas is worse and the state taxes your income too.

My JT was $900 for the first year, but I think the diesel puts the unloaded weight up one more weight fee tier. I think it is was $840 this year.

"Vehicle license fee" drops 12% per year till year 8 where it bottoms out. Weight fees of aprox $120 per 1000lb over 4,000lb base never goes away. They keep adding "fees" on because adding a "tax" requires putting it to a public vote.......

I was still paying over $500 for my 2006 Ram 3500 until I sold it last year.

From personal experience, if the vehicle has been bought in a different state within 2 years of moving to California, you will pay the difference in sales tax else there will be no additional sales tax in CA. This has been done precisely to make sure people don't buy stuff out of state and get them in paying no sales tax. It is sort of a reciprocal rule between states that have high sales tax.
