Wow, 4000 miles.

People like that are the reason the insurance rates are so high.

Man, that sucks. Any idea how that happened? Did they drive in, or camp in a bad spot and get swamped in a flood? With the winch line out, I'm assuming they drove in, got stuck, and then winched themselves in deeper trying to get out.

All the people around Moab that do these recoveries for a living are amazing. Last year at EJS luckily I was able to finish a trail and limp it back into town but they rebuilt and welded two new rear swaybar mounts for me in like an hour. And those tow rigs are monsters, one of them broke something, they built whatever it was to get it rolling again and went straight out to the next recovery.

Everyone wants to be an off roader
You make it sound like you have to go through some kind of flight school or training where only the best of best can make it until the end ?.

It's 90% common sense, 5% experience, which you'll get with common sense, and 5% luck.
The common sense relates directly to understanding what the vehicle can and cannot do, and THAT can only come from trying, carefully, cautiously, and either succeeding or failing.

It's people doing dumb shit without thinking first, like eating while driving, taking on their cell phones...

...or trying to drive through water that is WAY to deep. It's a Jeep, not a submarine.

Too many folks go out in brand new vehicles with very little experience, and fail to accurately account for the limitations of their rig. These trucks may be able to go anywhere, IF you know what you're doing.

And even that has its limits.

Guess you were there to know what happened or you’re psychic?
