For those out of warranty, I wouldn’t waste the money replacing with a factory unit. Aftermarket units are available for a much better price and hopefully better reliability.

There is a caulk tube product that is called ‘Seal and peel’. Applied with a caulk gun. Grab one end after it’s dry and is peels right off. Awesome for temporarily sealing up areas when trying to find air leaks.

I had a similar problem a while back. Turned out the computer was trying to read the TPMS in the spare. Took the spare off the tailgate and everything worked fine. I then remounted the spare with the valve stem as high up as possible.

From a weight capacity you are 100% correct. Towing is so much more stable with an E due to the stiffer sidewall. Off-road, I’ve found the E is also more puncture resistant. I think an E makes sense for his stated needs.
