So on my way home from work today my steering locked up while parking at the grocery store. It could still freely turn right, but I could not get the wheel to go back past center, luckily I was backing up to the right to get in a parking space and could get out of the way. Nothing is visibly wrong with any of the front suspension or steering components, and I gave everything a cursory shake looking for anything loose and nothing is.
Got my groceries and upon initially hopping in everything seemed working, but when I started driving it the ~300 yards to my house it started to lock up intermittently while going around the block. Figured out adding some muscle will push it past the lock and back to normal for a *short* amount of time, but I hear some grinding, so I suspect a tooth or two may have given up the ghost.
I'm about to go outside and jack the front up to see what I can find, I doubt muscling it home did it any good. Probably should've pursued getting that Steel steering gearbox TSB done when I was still under bumper to bumper warranty if it is what I think it is.

Steering locking up is not a good thing. Even out of warranty, I can see where some groups would be interested if it involved a collision or fatality. Have it looked at! Did you look at the fluid level for the pump? Could that be the grinding you heard?

I managed to find the issue last night, turns out a rock managed to get kicked up and get stuck between the frame rail and the input shaft for the steering gear. I guess a fluke. I think I'm going to make a cover for the area to try and prevent that from ever happening again.

No way! Good find. I did that on my Silverado once with a small log. Turned it one way and the log got wedged in. Steering was free the other way.
