Electric Power steering motor shuts off at various times while driving causing the steering wheel to lock up . It takes all your strength to steer Jeep to the curb side of road and is very dangerous . Once at curb side you must shut the car off and restart the car then the onboard computer will reset the power steering motor until it does it again . it has happened to me at least 25 times . I have taken it back to Hoblit Chrysler Jeep Dodge three times and the last time I picked it up from the jeep service center the power steering locked up 10 miles down the road . I brought it back, steering with all my strength, returning it in the locked out condition with the jeep still running . Service manager and head mechanic came out and plugged in the diagnostics computer while jeep still running and said leave it here we will try to fix it again to no avail . I called Hoblit service manager yesterday 4/19/2022 and told him it was still doing it. He said "their is no fix as of yet and Chrysler is working on it". the only fix i know of is to convert your jeeps electric power steering back to a belt drive power steering pump system . It cost about $4700.00 for parts and labor. The conversion Kits are available , DC Customs in Ukiah California has done four or five new jeeps already. Chrysler should have to pay for this fix its there puppy being they can't resolve the problem in house . By the way I talked to a lemon law attorney yesterday and he said you could be held liable if you sell your jeep knowing it has this condition. You must fix it before you can sell it . Don . pissed off proud owner of a jeep Gladiator

That’s a load of BS!! I took mine in last year around August or so, parked it at the dealership and left it running and walked in. I told the service assistant manager I had this power steering problem but that it only quits when the pump is super HOT.

I waited about an hour and the pump quit. Went back in and the tech came back out with his scanner. Couldn’t read anything nor make the pump do anything so he said the pump was shot and they ordered a new one. Simple.

I hope this is an issue that has been fixed with the '22s.

I've posted about it multiple times elsewhere. It's not a common problem, but a few have experienced it. It's big on Cadillac SUVs and certain other GM products, more than on Jeeps. I believe I MAY have posted something about it elsewhere but I'm not where all of my TSBs are.

I know there's a TSB about lost communication with the steering module, that sets a code (U0310 or something like that)

very sorry to hear this. Especially the way parts are so hard to get. Best of luck, and keep us posted on the good or bad.

I had it happen a few times before steering gearbox replacement, it caused me a WTF moments. After I had steering gearbox replaced and computer flash it's not happed since. The radio shut off at same time when it happened, strangely not far from my home most of the times. I guessed EM interfere or canbus glitch. If I'm not mistaken it was really windy too.

Look for fault code U0002-??
Those appear to be some communication related faults and I was messing with jscan on my truck the other day just to see if I could find something on jscan (the demo doesn't really do anything or allow you to snoop around to see what it can do) and it was COLD and windy and I wasn't dressed for it and was freezing (it was about 30 and windy) out there so didn't spend a lot of tine. but I had jscan do a "deep" scan or whatever it was called and alfaobd said it was all clear, so did jscan for the main stuff then in a deep scan it hit "radio" and kicked up a U0002-?? code and dang it I wish I could recall what the last digits were as it said there was a communication issue. It's supposed to hit 70 today so I'm going to see if I can force the error again and this time WRITE IT DOWN. It referred to the transmission shift lever or something and some position.
.........................
Anyway, if this is due to some communication thing, there should be a code there but it may not have recorded it if it was a transient thing and the vehicle was restarted and life is good right now.

My power steering turned off twice this winter. Both times when it was about 25 deg out. (this is not cold. we drove in -18 for several days).

Both times it was caused by me putting the gas pedal to the floor. It would then come back when I got down below 30 mph.

Once it happened, I could make it happen at will until I shut the truck off, then it solved itself.

The term LOCKED is absolutely incorrect. Its a bad choice of words. Nothing locks. you just lose power steering. Those of us who are old enough to have driven carbureted cars that occasionally stalled have the proper response to this hard wired into our brains.

Its not a big deal if you recognize the situation quickly. Unless you are parking, it doesn't even require much strength. Just push and let the wheel move. If you try to move it fast, its a problem. But just give it time. No big deal.
