I’m sure this has been asked plenty of times, but I tried searching and could not find anything.

My question is why are we not supposed to just remove the filter from the complete oil filter and reuse the housing?

I don’t see a benefit of using a new housing and overpaying for a filter every oil change

Reason being there isn't a filter element available AFAIK that properly fits the stock Gen 3 filter housing unlike the Gen 2. If you've ever pulled the element out of the housing you'll likely also to have noticed the lock tabs tend to break when doing so... our filters aren't designed with element replacement in mind.

It sounds like it's possible to use the Gen 2 filter housing and its replaceable (and cheaper) element on the Gen 3 engine, but the problem IIRC is the filter bypass valve moved from inside the filter adapter/cooler assembly on the Gen 2 to inside the filter itself on the Gen 3. Using a Gen 2 filter housing & element on a Gen 3 engine would then result in a loss of the filter bypass feature.

I think I read somewhere that the folks at Baxter were making an adapter so we can use a Wix spin on filter but I'm yet to see it.
