Pic for attention I guess..?

Hi,

I have a 2021 Gladiator Mojave with 8spd automatic currently at 28000mi.
I really love my truck and put pretty passionate work into the setup. However, I have no engine/transmission knowledge and I can't even judge if this is considered as an issue or I'm just a bit sensitive.

1. When I start rolling from stop-when first gear engages- and/or first gear shifts into second gear-when first gear disengages- I hear this very light gear grinding/shaving sort of noise. It does not happen all the time, but about one out of ten times. Sometimes, I hear that noise both time when I start rolling from stop to first gear AND first to second gear. Other half of the time, I just hear it when first gear disengages and goes into second gear. It does not happen all the time but occasionally.
2. when I press brake, decelerating from approximately about 5-8mph, either to complete stop or 1~3mph to go over bumps, the gear/clutch? disengages pretty aggressively/roughly, the transmission clunks a little, jerks a bit back and forth. This happens about 6 out of 10 times when I decelerate to go over bump.

When I ask around about these two issues, I keep getting answers like it's a jeep, not a luxury sedan or suv. But come on.. it is ZF 8HP which actually goes into those luxurious vehicles.
Should I be worried about this?

Please give me some insights if this is something I should be worried about because this is pretty annoying.

Thank you so much!

I get a grinding sound if I make a hard acceleration from a dead stop (like pulling out of a driveway into traffic on a higher speed road). It'll sometimes do it at a stop light if I accelerate too suddenly (meaning fast enough to cause the issue, not stomping on the accelerator..)

I have not mentioned it to a service department but like you I'm not sure if it may be caused by something else. I just assume it's the transmission but it could be something else for all I know.

I will follow this to see if you find anything out. I need to get an oil change soon and might bring it up, but really don't want them taking my gladiator for any length of time unless I have some sort of idea what might be wrong first.

that sounds about the same to my issue. But I hear it when Im not accelerating hard too. I will take this truck to dealership to have them check it out maybe next year.

thanks :)

Could be the clutch plate in the trans. It typically comes with a clunk and vibration after it re-engages after slipping.
You'd feel it slip, it would feel like the truck is gliding almost for a slipt second, rpm's would go up, it would catch up/re-engage and make a clunking noise and you'd feel a vibration.

Been a long time since I was a mechanic though so might want to let a professional answer :P

Update!

I have took it to dealership couple days ago, they couldn't duplicate the noise for a week and I came into the dealership to test drive with the technician. He admitted that he could hear it but very inconsistently. Though they didn't take any action about it other than documenting it into vehicle record for warranty coverage.

I noticed that the transmission has to be hot to have the light shaving noise to come out more often. I have attached the video.

My next step would be maybe changing transmission fluid which I'm not even sure if it will help or not. Any suggestions after watching the video?

I was on 35x11.5r17 ridge grappler with stock gear when I first noticed the noise. I'm currently on patagonia milestar mt02 38x13.5r17 with 5.13 regear.

Is your dealer going to warranty it with those mods.

Well, they did inspection for free and seemed to do "some" inspection without charging me so I guess they did it under warranty this time.

I mean they have to prove that the modification is causing damage to the associated part in order to void the warranty. My rationale behind my mod not affecting the transmission warranty is that this vehicle is rated for 7500 lbs towing capacity. I do admit that the big tires would induce extra load into transmission and all the drive line, but with regear, it should be substantially less than towing like 5000lbs trailer lol.

I'm sorry. I'm trying to understand. You are saying that many of us here in the forum has had warranty voided on transmission for having gear and tire?

Honestly didn't hear anything odd. Run her till she really gets loud or something falls off.

This is a new TSB out. Mine is one of 2 that i know of that they are rebuilding, not replacing the transmission. The dealer is still waiting on special tools to the rebuild. 4 weeks in so far.

My first symptom was a hard shift into reverse, but only when the motor was cold. This went on the last 3 months.
Then I got the funky shift from 3rd to 4th, with the check engine light on. P733 code.
I took it to the dealer the next day.
