Wonder what the benefit was of this super complex V engine vs a 4 or 5 cyl diesel? Too tall? Certainly not balance.

The v is super duper quiet though for a diesel.
I think it all boils down to cost savings on research and design. I’m a die hard Buy American guy but Stellantis hasn’t exactly embodied the reliability of the old day Dodge / Jeep vehicles. They needed a diesel that would be relatively light and have a low enough profile to fit under the hood. They found an Italian VM Motori engine that fit their parameters. It’s pretty close to the one used in the Grand Cherokee that has proven reliable enough to usually survive the warranty period. I believe they expected similar performance from this diesel. Last just long enough so that you have to trade it in when you hit a position of equity on the loan.

I fully expect the electric variants to be rife with problems.

Rant over lol

But why build a v diesel in the first place. It doesn’t save money in design or execution. My understanding, the only two things v gets you is shorter and by shorter, stiffer crank shaft. No benefit other than shape.

I’m only 50. I’m not old enough to have experienced a well built Chrysler or reliable jeep product. I got into Jeeps at the end of amc. My cj5 had that amc v8 in it that seemed to hold together well… as well it should at like … 10hp/litre

Great question. That I cannot answer. I would assume it has to do with trying to maintain similar mounting points for the motor mounts and electrical wiring. Transmission length and driveshaft length. We need a Chrysler engineer to answer that one. I assume they saved a penny .

Maybe this is a sign they actually have the fuel pump fix FINALLY.
Does this mean the next powerplant is ready for production?
Hope it's the I-6TT w/ a hybrid option.
I have heard that the recall fix is just to pop open the pump inspect for metal. No metal = leave it and sign off. Metal = new pump with some improvements for wear surfaces. This was per a service advisor at a ram dealer. Nothing formal either way.

Semantics but…. Chrysler hasn’t been around for a long time.

One sedan and a minivan would be very upset to hear you say that.

Seriously though... Plymouth, Mercury, Oldsmobile, Saturn, and Pontiac had more and more interesting models when they got axed.

Seriously what is the CDJR strategy? C and D are figments of a fevered imagination at this point.

Hey, just because they can’t read, doesn’t mean the charger challenger crowd doesn’t exist. They’re a lot like the Altima crowd… but with union jobs instead of none. ;)

I’ll paint pen mine when it goes in. Thought this seems silly- anyone can undo the two torx bolts that hold the regulator on and see….. but if your seeing metal there, h the a half Butt screen that’s surrounding it isn’t containing anything- so the injectors are going to be toast anyway. ??‍♂

Apologize in advance if my rant gets anyone’s feathers ruffled ? anywhom,
$70k for a midsize pickup with a power plant that will become obsolete the minute it is released, sounds like Stelantis is trying to unload whatever they have left in the factory before retooling for a new engine. The whole EcoDiesel fiasco since gen one was nothing but trying to capitalize on a legacy of Dodge Cummings diesel by the PR team. When I was growing up in Europe, whenever we shopped for an oil burner my dad would check if it had VM motori under the hood, if it did it was always a hard pass… variant of this very 630 engine was used in Maseratis and Lancia concoctions which was fine since by the time you hit 50k Km on these cars typical owner would have been trading them in.

I love my diesel JL and JT. Really wouldn't want one if it had a gas engine. The torque and fuel economy are a perfect match for these platforms. May not be as reliable as an older Cummins but what is? I have 65K trouble-free miles on the JL. Hate to see them kill the diesel. They will all be electric in a few more years.

People Work?
Imagine that meeting at corporate.

How many more diesels can we build with leftover inventory?
Maybe 600 if we don't deplete the parts stock.
Let's build 1,000.
Ed, make us up a special badge and Cindy, ask AI for some catchy names that we throw on it to jack the price up a few grand.

Space savings. The V design saves 12 - 18 inches minimum.

Over a 4cyl? I guess it’s not designed for this market or vehicle… so it’s hard to imagine what concerns they were looking at.
I imagine smaller cylinders make it’s quieter and smoother at idle given the proper balancing.

4” bore x 6 = 24” plus coolant passages, iron liners and accessories can quickly result in a 36” long engine.
