My take is that the paperwork, etc. is part of the cost of doing business.
You figure in all that it takes to order, receive, prep and sell, the facilities, utilities, staff and so on - it's part of doing business. No other business charges you a separate fee for the paperwork involved in the business. When you rent a tool they don't charge for the paperwork involved.
They could charge for every little detail, every person involved along the way.
It's one of the costs of doing business. It's overhead.
Some dealerships don't even charge that fee.
Yeah, I think everybody on both sides knows that any dealer doc fee is just a money grab. Just been normalized in most markets.

Online somewhere. Everything online is true... Right? lol

So my 2021 Mojave has everything the X does except the steel bumpers.
Including power leather seats? Safety package, convenience group (including the "cold weather package), tech package, leather-wrapped shift knob and parking brake handle, SelecTrac transfer case, body color roof and fender flares...............

It makes the vehicle cost seem cheaper - the old psychology of 9.95 instead of 10.00 bit.

Oops, no power seats. And no heated seats. Yes on everything else.

Of course my 2021's tech package may not have what a 2024 or 2025 does. Tech moves fast.

I use the heated seats a lot with my back, and the heated steering wheel is a must with Raynaud's in even cool weather.
We were at a dealership waiting to chat with a guy when a woman in her 50s walked in looking at Grand Cherokees and talking to the sales guy there and asked about the heated seats - she said she'll never buy another vehicle without them. She used them even in the summer to calm her back issues. I don't do that, but sure love 'em when it's 40 or below.
Years of leaning over fenders, years of lifting transmissions, engine blocks, differentials, carrying parts across plowed fields to broken equipment, it all got to me.

BTW - destination fee has gone up from 1895 to 1995.

Look what this dealer does -
A grand for "pre-deliver service fee" and $585 for electronic filing fee!
Over 1500 of added fees.

I agree 100%. Heated seats are a must in WI. But I got a good deal on my Glad Mo and didn't check if it had heated seats. Looking back, I'd give up my painted roof and flairs just for the heated seats. There are kits out there and I will be installing heated seats using the AUX switches in the MO.

The power seat must be a newer option, but I'd rather have the manual seat for simple reliability.

My wife complained a little when we got our Mojave home and we really started playing with it and going through it's bells and whistles. She said something like, "60 grand and no power seats"! And I said something like, "60 grand and no heated seats"!

Yes, the power seats came out in the 24 model year - X versions only.
Two ways to go - either from a wrecked Jeep, or a kit that goes into your existing seats.
I figured you use use the aux switches and if those didn't handle the amperage - relays, but as I recall, the draw is well under the 40 amp rating of two of those switches.

Yep. I've put heated seat pads, generic from Amazon, into a couple of our vehicles already. They work well. The hardest part is taking the seat apart and putting it back together. I have a serious staple gun just for the job.

For Amperage for everything except USB ports, I always use relays.

Maybe you are already aware -
if so, then this is for others looking on -

The auxiliary switches actually control relays. No power goes through the switches at all. They are electronic which control power going to the relay coil.

K17, K18. K20, K21 are the relays for the aux switches. So when you connect anything to the aux switch wiring, it's going through one of these relays.

That is excellent information! Thank you! I haven't added anything to AUX switches yet on my Mojave. Good to Know!

Should be a Sticky if not already.

Some don't even charge such a fee. some have tried to charge crazy amounts more, thus the law here. I see it as a part of the cost of doing business. You can't sell a new vehicle without it. it's another line item to add in. The proof is that there is even a law restricting the price. Dealers tried for years to toss in a line item for each little thing.
They know that it's involved in every single vehicle they sell.
They don't charge for ordering, or the "paperwork" involved there.
Those people need to be there anyway - they are paid regardless of if a vehicle is sold or not. It's too much like all of the add-on fees for so many other things. Thankfully, this state put a choke hold on it. There aren't that many people who actually "touch" anything these days with it all computerized. Maybe 2 people? Here, it's all online and one guy literally does it all in minutes.
What do they do about the pay for those people when nothing is being sold and there's no "document" to deal with? They get paid anyway. Part of the cost of doing business.
It’s a cost of doing business they have to pass on somehow. They can bury it somewhere else if you’d prefer, but that will just upset someone else paying attention to that other line it passes to.

What they do about the pay for those people when nothing is being sold is they try to absorb it with sales business and add ons (document fees) for them doing something. Just like when the service department is slow and techs are sitting around. The business and the techs are not making as much as if they were doing jobs with billable hours.

It's all smoke and mirrors. Some don't charge any document fees, and others, like I posted above, really sock it to you hard. They make it look like you are getting really deep discounts, then take a chunk of it back. Psychology, smoke and mirrors, whatever works to make you think you got a great deal.
