I have a 2021 Willys Gladiator with the eco diesel. The power is insane and the fuel economy is amazing. Cons: it is not fun dealing with the DEF fluid freezing up in the winter on the subzero days. Also, I noticed that I have been using oil which is concerning not to mention the check engine light that just came on. It’s my intake manifold and it has failed! Hoping they cover it under the power train warranty that I still have (60 months or 100k miles) I only have 77k on it right now. Just disappointed that I am having so many issues well under 100k miles. This thing has been babied!

The majority of people you see complaining about an Ecodiesel fall into one of two categories.

1. They don't own an EcoDiesel and are just parroting what they read
2. They owned a 1st/2nd Gen and unfortunately dealt with a lot of issues

The 3rd Gen EcoDiesel is over 80% new design that allegedly has fixed the flaws from the first two generations, only time will tell if that's true or not. The CP4 Pump decision was kind of stupid but every brand is dealing with that so, not really fretting.
Not true, I have a 3rd gen eco diesel in my 2021 gladiator. I have 77k miles on it and its using oil, and now the intake manifold is shot. This thing has been well maintained and babied. Absolutely ridiculous we are dealing with this. Its still under warranty but trying to find a mopar certified mechanic who is capable of the job is a nightmare .

To Diesel or not to Diesel, that is the question.
There is a reason that FCA quit making the 3.0 diesel for ANY vehicle. And it was a long history leading up to that...

The reason they stopped making the 3.0L EcoDiesel was because of the HPFP recall. They could no longer produce and sell the engines without the new part, which took over a year to be released. And at that point, they didn't have enough parts for the recall let alone to launch engine production again. I've been waiting for over two years for the recalled part and I'm still in line.

I think that was just the straw breaking the camel's back.

The EcoDiesel was very popular. FCA/Stellantis reported that the EcoDiesel exceeded their sales expectations. As a matter of fact, they increased production due to demand. Ram and Jeep would have kept the engine for a few more years had the HPFP not set them back.

GM recently announced that they are discontinuing the 3.0L Duramax due to stricter emissions, so the EcoDiesel would have eventually been discontinued, too.

I wasn't in the market to buy a new Gladiator with the EcoDiesel, but my timeline was pushed up due to the discontinuation. I don't regret it though. It's a fun Jeep to drive.

There are lots of people who love them in both Rams and Jeeps and have had great luck personally and I was always intriqued in both vehicles. You'd hope on a gen 3 of the last iteration, they would have finally worked the bugs out of them so I hope this at the end buyers have good luck.

But for FCA/Stellantis, within the total scheme of things I think, only as an opinion, that they were viewed as more problems than they were worth at some point. I was going to get one in a Ram at one point but in doing my research, I got cold feet.

We have a few Gen 3 engines on the Ram forum now with over 200,000 miles. So far, they seem to be holding up well.

The Gen 2 engine (2014 - 2019) was hit and miss due to quality control. VM Motori had never built engines for mass production, so they relied heavily on robots. It appears that the wrong sized bearings were put in some of the engines, which led to a high bottom-end failure rate. So, you either got a good engine or a bad engine. Most bad engines were replaced under the 5 year/100,000 mile warranty.

Nonetheless, there are a few engine builders who specialize on EcoDiesel rebuilds. They are having great success and getting theses engines back out on the road for a decent price.

I've been keeping track of some of the high mileage engines. There's many more than this, but most people hangout in the facebook groups and not on the forums.

Good info, I did see a couple of real good deals on the 3.0's that still were tempting there on 23's. It looks like they may have worked most of the bugs out by gen 3. AND those are Rams so the 3.0 is already toting an extra ton around before it even starts up...

It's the same reason as why they dropped the Hemi too. Meeting the new emissions and CAFE numbers.

We bought our 2023 Gladiator back in March for $15,000 off MSRP.

The Gen 2 and Gen 3 are both pretty solid considering it's a light duty engine with a B10 life of 150,000 miles. Emissions is the biggest issue. As you can see, I've had to replace the EGR cooler, DEF pump, and NOx sensors. Considering how much towing I do with the truck, I can't complain.

A year later and I’m still at it but….about to pull the trigger on a used eco diesel. Do I get the used diesel with low miles which is certified or do I take advantage of this current promos on 2025? Got an out the door price on a 25 Willys for 41k but the 3.0 is just amazing. Recall was already addressed and the CPO is assuring. Decisions decisions.
