Sport S models with the 3.73 gears. Will running 33’s make freeway driving and grade driving suffer horribly? Also it’s the Auto 8 speed. Any thoughts? Thanks. Trying to avoid re gearing for now.

You will be fine, I have the same set up (285/70r17 and 3.73). At 70 mph and up you will still have 8th gear on most terrain, but up hills you will see a lot of 7th... Averaged about 18 mpg between Houston and San Antonio with an average speed of about 75 last weekend. I will be putting on some 315/70s next week, have a feeling I will be looking at 4.56 or 4.88 in the next year or so.

Appreciate the response. I would love larger than 33’s but they will be at least better than stock. Do you have a lift?

I ran 35s on 3.45 gears in my JLU and it was still fine. Got good fuel economy too.

Hmm, would live 35’s but not sure that would be best. I’m looking at the daystar 2 inch front level kit

I run 285/75r17’s (34) on my overland with 3.73, it is great on the hwy and my mpg’s are great. I can’t understand why ppl worry about such a small change!

And you routinely tow 5,000 pounds in the hills?

Do you hit 7th gear?

Just wondering how it handles with a real load in 4 and 5 degree hills.

For cruising, daily driving, using it as a car just driving around it's a no brainer. You simply don't hit 8th gear and stay in 6th or 7th and the ratio is nearly the same.

Don’t tow, that’s not what the OP was asking.

I check to see what gear i am in frequently and when cruising along at 60mph the jeep is in 8th gear unless it is a notable grade. The transmission handles the tires perfectly well.

Curious because mine with stock tires rarely hits 8th and then it's only 55 or above on the level with no wind. Normally at 55 it's in 7th, sometimes lower.
8th is rare unless it's smooth sailing.
It's fine in the lower gears but with mine 8th seems to be reserved for level highway. Any wind and even then it's dropped a gear.
Not an issue normally but 8th is infrequent for sure.
