Hi gang,

Family and I are about to head to NC from Ohio and I am contemplating taking the Mojave for this trip. We typically take my wife’s XC90 because it is comfortable and performs well on the highway. However, I’m thinking it might be fun to have the doors and top off at the beach this time. When we travel south, we typically go I77 through WV. If any of you have ever driven that road, you know how winding it can get at some points. I am a bit apprehensive about the M/Ts on that stretch if it starts to rain. Do any of you have any experience traveling long distances on these tires on wet highway pavement? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
C

I live in SC but moved here from NE Ohio 12 years ago. I've made that trip up and down I-77 a number of times (winter/summer) without issue...although any winter driving through the WV mountains can get dicey. I'f your family's used to riding in the JT without whining about the ride, you'll be just fine. If they're more used to the Volvo ride, you might hear some complaining about the noise/ride quality.

just drive the thing and stop over thinking it. Your not on a race track doing hot laps, so who care what tires you have as long as they basically work.

That said i had no issues running CO twisty roads in the rain last week.

Hey thanks for the response. We have taken the Mojave from Columbus to Youngstown for baseball in the past, so they know the ride is different. The back seat, while not slumming it is not the Volvo, correct. However it is their idea to take the Jeep. I think it would be nice to be able to toss all the sandy shit into the back and take the top off. It is just getting there that might be an issue. We are splitting the drive up because of when we have to leave so we are talking about 4 hours in the truck at a time. My only concern is a M/T on wet highway pavement going 65 around those damn turns.

I overthink everything lol. It’s my nature. Thanks for the input.

@Verne, your gladiator looks like it is set up nice for a road trip. I don't see why you wouldn't take it and build some awesome memories with your family.

Have fun and be safe.

I completely understand your concern about the MTs. I had KM2s on my JK, and I immediately removed them when my daughter started driving it. They were downright slippery in the rain. At least the Wildpeak MTs have some siping. I have no experience with them, so hopefully someone else will chime in about their wet performance.

You’ll be fine. Muds aren’t excellent in heavy rain but they aren’t bad either. Especially new ones. Just drive slower if it gets slick and stay in the right lane (middle lane if going downhill around semi trucks). I know the drive very well from my college days at WVU and I get your concern but you’ll be alright.

I have no doubt youlk be fine, and remember your Jeeps traction control is pretty amazing.

I've had those tires on my Gladiator for over two years now and routinely drive it in the worst weather. Never had an issue and no traction problems in MT winters or rain.

Not much rain of late in CA but in the few storms the Falken M/Ts were in they did just fine as long as you don’t drive like a lunatic. This is my first M/T after several A/Ts and I’ve been pleasantly surprised how well they perform on road. Not that loud either.

The tires will be fine, drive them in the rain here all the time. Only thing you have to worry about are the NC drivers themselves. (not me I'm a good NC driver)

If it starts raining, slow down and take the next exit for a coffee break. Roads are especially slick for the 1st 15-20 minutes after rain begins - no matter which tires you have.
