Anyone in a really cold climate running the Baja Boss AT's?

I put the KM3's on my truck this summer and they are completely useless when it gets below zero here. I went with them primarily because my factory Falken MT's worked so well last year, and the KM3's were so light. They are a disaster. They're noisy, run small, and absolutely suck in the cold.

I'm getting a pass from the wife for my KM3 mistake, but don't want to screw this up twice.

I am running the Baja Boss Mud Terrains and I am blown away with the winter performance. Over the last weekend alone I have driven them over 300 miles on mountain highways and backroads covered in a variety of snow, slush, thick ice with literally nothing on top you could ice skate in it. Roads bad enough max speeds within 80 miles of the pass was 35 - 45 mph.

Combined with the select trac auto 4wd I didn’t have any slipping unless I was doing it on purpose. On thick ice it would spin a little bit but keep straight and keep pulling.

I have no hesitation recommending the mud terrains for any and all conditions you would drive a Jeep. If the mud terrains are this good I would imagine the all terrains would excel a bit better for ice and highway stuff until the snow/slush got deeper. Really impressed with these tires and they look awesome, balance well, and have long tread wear.

Cheers

Similar to Baja Boss, but they aren't offered in 37" sizes.
I ran the Cooper At3 in a 37x12.5x17 on my Ram 2500 Diesel--they wore well, and handled the weight of the truck. Not sure if they'd be too stiff for the Gladiator, but I was happy with them for my truck.

Thanks for the info. I'll take a look at the MT's as well. I'm probably going wit the AT's because the wife's head would explode if they don't work out this time.

I’ve been so so so impressed with the General Grabber ATXs. I went with an AT because the Cooper STT Pros on my previous truck were getting so loud as they wore.

The grabbers have taken everything I’ve thrown at them. Aired down to 15 PSI they have fantastic traction. I’ve scraped and pinched the sidewalls so many times but they shake it off like nothing.

Over the holidays I did Moab rock crawling, and then drove all throughout Summit County CO right after that for a few days during a snow storm, and they were great in the snow. At Moab too, I did Top of the World while the trail was completely covered in snow. I made it to the top, but passed a built TRD Pro 4Runner that took about an hour to get up the gatekeeper obstacle, and couldn’t make it past some icy shelves further past it, about a quarter mile from the top. He was running 35” Toyo MTs and had no hookup in the snow at all.

Now that you've had them a while, what are your thoughts?
I love these tires. Love them. They have the perfect blend of performance, noise, aggressive looks, and street performance I'm looking for. They performed great on sand when I went to the hammers for a poker run. I noticed they don't flat spot when sitting in my driveway like the patagonias did, and they don't wobble. But we'll see after some tread wear. I suspected the patagonias wobbled more than most because they are more crowned at the top to promote more weight on the center lugs. The Baja Boss's are more flat.

However, I'll say that despite a more street oriented tread, my MPG has surprisingly fallen by about 1-2 mpg. I'm not getting 14.7 mpg to low 15s, whereas before I got around 16. Even more strangely, is I'm getting overall worse mpg on 4.88s than I got on 4.10s.

I almost consistently got 16.7 mpg on 4.10s and 37s, but ever since the regear to 4.88s, I haven't come close to 16 mpg on a tank.

I am also running the same tire. Gotta say, I'm loving mine. I have just about 15,000 miles on them and they are wearing awesome and much like you, they have been awesome in gravel, sand slick rock, snow and still not loud on pavement.

Thanks for the detailed update. I'm happy to hear the tires are working out for you. This is definitely the direction I'm going provided I can get them soon. Interesting to hear about the MPG hit on 4.88's. I'm planning on going 5:13 with 37's because I didn't think 4:88 would be enough to make a difference. My truck struggled to pull 8th gear with the factory setup, so I didn't see the 4:88's being enough given the additional tire diameter.
I go back an fourth on the rehearing anyway. The bottom line is that the engine just doesn't have enough power to push this brick down the road at higher highway speeds. For my rig, it seems to take around 2800 rpm to maintain 75mph,. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter if that's in 6th gear or 8th gear. Ad I dream of the day I get a pathetic 16 mph. I'm struggling to get 14 on the highway. I'm definitely going to do more research on the subject of gearing before putting money into gears. I believe it's the right thing in the long run, but I don't think it's going to do anything about the mileage.

Thanks again, an I appreciate your (or anyone else's) thoughts on the gearing.

I did a big thread on my install and review of 4.88s. Long story short, I should have gone to 5.13s. 4.88s made the biggest difference in 4HI, but so far I've seen a mileage drop and no discernable seat of the pants difference. However I am reserving complete judgment, as we have transitioned to winter blend gas, and the temps have dropped. If I fail to see improvement by the end of this upcoming summer, my opinion on regear will be 100% waste of time and money.

I'll note I am in 8th gear often, and I am playing a game to see how high I can get my MPG. With aggressive attention, I still can't break 15 mpg in the city, and have been sitting at 14.3-14.5 consistently.

I didn't realize it, but I read your 4.88 thread. Great job on the swap and thread. I would never tackle my gears, even with expert help. Your thread had a lot to do with my thinking I'd just jump to the 5:13's. I really appreciate info from your thread.

As far as mileage, I'm not getting close to that and barley did with the factory tires. That said, aggressive and attention aren't typically arranged in a sentence about my driving style in quite the same way you used them:). I actually don't think MPG will improve much with 5:13's, but I have to find out at some point.

Thanks again!

Ordered from Priority Tires. Less than $1200 for the set of 4 delivered (including sales tax)
Only had them on for 3 weeks, about 800 miles so far. Extremely pleased. Much quieter than the Falkens my Rubicon came with. Smooth ride too. Still playing with air pressures, but only dropped 2mpg.
I guess time/miles will tell how they hold up.
