I went down the rabbit hole of 3D printing and realized I don't know what I'm even looking for or if what I want done is even possible.

I currently own a 2021 Mojave and would love to add the charging port from @813 Fabrication & Design. However, the cowl for the Mojave is bigger compared to all the other trim models, leaving me unable to use the 4xe charging port/cover.

Anyone with knowledge of 3D files and printing...how hard is it to develop a file to print a 4xe-type cowl for a Mojave? Or maybe a bracket that'll link the 4xe cowl to the existing Mojave cowl bolt holes? Or b/c the Mojave cowl is already wider/taller, can I take the 4xe charge port door, bolt it to my current cowl and use a hole saw to add this: https://www.813fabrication.com/product-page/noco-insert-for-4xe-cowl-panel

Again, I'm not sure if the Mojave cowl is *just* taller or if its taller and wider or what.

I was going to reach out to a few developers on fiverr.com but figured I'd come to you guys first before shelling out any money.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated!

Commercial 3D printer operations will have a 3D scanner. They could scan the original cowl and then produce a 3D printed version.
If you provided them the necessary parts or dimensions they could edit the scanned files in Solid Works or whatever software they use, and incorporate the modifications you want into the printed piece.

The issue is that all of that is going to cost you quite a bit, because it's one-off work and you're talking about hours to scan, edit, and produce.

I have a high resolution 3d scanner for my research https://www.artec3d.com/portable-3d-scanners/artec-eva

and I also have a 2021 mojave ... my main issue right now is free time ... a scan and first pass clean-up is probably 30 minutes (I can make time for that)

The modification of the file and printing is what I don't have time for but isn't too difficult

So ... this would require someone with a reasonable 3d printer and some CAD skills

This has been in my distant future projects list for a while because I would like to do a low snorkel (rugged ridge amfib) ... but this will require a similar custom 3d print

Would working with that type of 3D scan/file require additional knowledge besides what’s required to come up with a 3D print job?

Would finding someone like that be easy on fiverr.com?

If it’s a reasonable price, I’m willing to pay you for your time. And I’d share the print file with you as well.

Sorry for the delay in reply, it was my Grandson's 1st Birthday party today :)

I have been asked several times if I can print a cowl setup like the 4xe for the Mojave and also the JK. I have scans of the cowl and plan to work on a different solution that can work with the cowl and at the very least offer the ability to add an air coupler to the area. To design and print a full 2-piece cowl like the 4xe has is much more of an undertaking. The larger piece of the cowl setup is plastic. The door/trim area is cast aluminum. The door itself has a spring mechanism and a few other working parts. So, it would be a lot of work/fab/prototyping to create a clone of the two pieces than just designing and printing something that will work similar to the factory cowl pieces. It would probably be less work / modification to take the two cowls to a good bodyshop and have them blend the two together so it work with the Mojave.

Any chance you also have access to a Standard/Rubicon cowl you could scan? I can do the CAD work on the Mojave cowl in trade for a scan of the regular cowl. ?

I’ve been planning to make my own version of the 4xe style cowl with door for both driver and passenger side. A scan would cut down my modeling time significantly.

Sorry ... I am not fortunate enough to have more than one jeep! ... that said ... a scan of the 4xe and a mirror operation should start you on the right path

Jeremy made some great points above about the 4xe being an assembly and not a single straightforward piece... haven't looked at on close enough myself, but his points are good ones

Happy Bday kid!! Hope you got lots of cake and stayed up late!! ?

Now I’m just thinking out load but what I was thinking of doing was just get the 4xe cowl to the Mojave dimensions while still keeping the opening the same dimensions so I could still use the 4xe door. This way, the only custom piece is the cowl itself.

I’m assuming that would still be possible, right?

That’s more of the direction I was thinking. Perhaps maybe skip the whole door assembly all together and make a less obtrusive access port for air bulkheads?

I know there have been DIY posts that have done this: the 4xe cowl without the door. Just not on the Mojave.

Again, I’m hoping to make this as close to OEM as possible before I go down the inevitable rabbit hole of all the endless possibilities ?

If i were takimg a stab at this, i would take the scan of the 4xe cowl, intersect it with the mojave cowl, try to generate a filet surface between the two and trim the overlapping interior.
It's just a matter if it will just be ugly and any amount of filet will allow for a smooth transition.

I used to use geomagic raindrop back in the day. Not sure it exist anymore. Solidworks is probably still around.

I’m a Solidworks guy. Really it’s been the gold standard for 15-20 years at this point. Not going away anytime soon.

Yes, the front cast aluminum part clips into the plastic cowl. In order to use that same piece, the cowl would need to be modeled with the same clip areas which could be a challenge. It could be done, I have no doubt. For me, my concern would be the amount of time for modeling and the amount of dollars needed for a few prototypes would probably outweigh the reward. I know there are many that would be interested, but the cost of the final pieces would be 2-3x the cost of the Mopar pieces (or more) by the time they are printed or molded since it would be small runs of parts compared to the thousands that Mopar is producing.
