I've got a 2020 manual transmission 8.4" screen Rubicon with 57,000km. When the truck is first started, the screen functions normally the way it did when it was new, and there is only about a half second lag. Unfortunately, as it warms up, the lag gets worse and worse, and affects all functions that go through the screen.

-Adjust volume down or up, can take up to 30 seconds to respond, and then action happens all at once.
-Put transmission in reverse, but the backup camera won't turn on for 15-30+ seconds, even if finished reversing. Backup camera becomes functionally useless except for initial cold start. Or I can put it in reverse and wait 30+ seconds for the backup camera to maybe come on...
-Climate adjustments, same story, make an adjustment and then wait 15-30+ seconds.
-After a 20+ minute drive, turn vehicle off, startup truck again 5 minutes later, truck usually black screens, "Jeep" startup screen never happens. Have to pull over, turn off engine, open door, restart and MAYBE it will work again. If it does work, the lag will persist. Sometimes it just stays black screen frozen.
-Receiving a text message will freeze Bluetooth music playback and simultaneously kill fans for 15-30+ seconds. If a series of texts are received, it can sometimes freeze the whole head unit and black screen. Taking phone calls never works.
-When you push a button and wait for a response, pushing any other button while system is frozen will make the lag take longer, and then finally after 15-30 seconds all actions happen at once, or a black screen situation happens. Serious patience is required!
-On longer drives 1 hour plus, especially in the summer time, the screen gets alarmingly hot to the touch. hot enough you cannot keep your hand on it. I have a fire extinguisher ready because, well, "Jeep Life"

The only thing that stops the lag is 2 hour+ of sitting and cooling down. Upon restart, it functions relatively normally for 4 or 5 minutes till it begins heating up and lagging worse and worse. This all seemed to start right when my truck turned 3 years old, after warranty ran out. I still have another almost 2 years of powertrain warranty, but I doubt that will cover the screen. I am reluctant to bring it into the dealership for fear of them charging me money, and not finding a solution. Especially because it does function normally for the first 5 minutes, with my luck a tech will say its completely normal.

The only thing I can think to fix it is a new head unit, but from the research I've done, that is a $2500-$4000 (CDN) part. And if the problem is in the BCM or ECM, It may not even resolve the issues I'm having.

I'm getting really frustrated with this thing. I love this truck so damn much, and what it can do offroad is incredible. But my wife thinks we should trade it in, and she's starting to make a lot of sense... Its not a good road trip adventure machine if it drives us insane, and we can't count on it.

Help!

You already know the answer. The warranty is expired, and you didn't purchase an extended warranty. Trade it in on a new one, and maybe Jeep will fix it for the next guy on the CPO warranty.

If me, I would be looking for a salvage pull unit. If you want to save even more money, consider a 7.0 radio. Just make sure it is a pull out of a Gladiator.

Looks like salvage yard pulls are running anywhere from $560-$900 for the larger 8.4" unit. I would look into what security codes (if any) you would need to get it to work once you get it installed.I suspect @Hootbro could answer this.

Edit: hmm, seems the webpage link won't go directly to my search results. You'll have to go there and start your own search. Edited the link to go to the home page.

Yessir, I tried both. Tried unmarrying my tazer as well, does the same thing. After updating the tazer, still the same problem.

I think it needs a software update badly, as my version is 19.11.4d but I don't know if that can be done myself, or if I need to take it into the dealership... but the dealership here is... problematic

If I trade it in, it certainly won't be another Jeep. The quality issues I've had are pretty staggering. That being said, I love this truck and don't want to give up on it. Also, if I purchased the extended warranty, that would have cost me about the same $ as a new head unit so.....
