What's in a Name?
Well, my wife is a firm believer that only basic white girls drive white Jeeps. So here I am, enjoying my PSL. I honestly don't name my cars so this is new territory for me, lol. Pretty sure we're just gonna call her the Jeep.

Why a Jeep?
We started renting Jeeps a few years ago just for fun on vacations. I think what pushed me over the edge was a 2013 Dune JKUR we rented from Sixt in Vegas and then wailed on for a few thousand miles all over the southwest. I had caught the fever then for sure! I still really loved my full-size truck though, and either way I knew that I couldn't afford a JKUR or a Brute Doublecab at that time. So I made do for several years while finishing up grad school and moving to IL for work. When the JT launched I about lost my mind - I still wanted a Jeep and the Dodge was only getting older and less fun to navigate through Chicago. We started saving a little each month for a payment while I waited for Dune to show up. Spoiler Alert - it did/has not. In mid-2021 I realized I was just punishing myself and using Dune as an excuse to not get one. But hey - I've had the same truck for 17 years at this point and it felt a little wild to spend this kind of money on something. I also realized that one of the reasons I love my Dodge in white is that it's been beaten on pretty good but still looks great. This is exactly what I want out of this Jeep. So, here we go.

Holy Grail of Options?
I have buried the Dodge in some nasty stuff and knew I wanted a new pickup that was both lighter and had full lockers. I got into a pinch or two in the rented Jeeps that lockers saved me from, so it was a no brainer to get the JTR. I wanted the ecodiesel bad, mostly because I always felt like I missed out on having a Cummins in my generation of Dodge Ram. I had to finally realize that it was a bad idea for me. I want to keep this truck for a while and the headaches of a modern diesel did not seem worth it to me. I still have to get the Dodge smogged which is enough of a PITA, so I can't imagine trying to do that with this truck in 20 years. The final nail in the diesel was that I really wanted the 4auto transfer case, which is only available with the pentastar. So, my holy grail wound up being a 3.6 JTR with 4auto. I threw in the saddle leather to get me some of that sweet sweet brown I love too. A Jeep like that is somewhat impossible to find pre-built or used, so away to Gupton I went.

I got some other options too, like aux switches, cold weather, bedliner, steel bumpers and upgraded wheels. I'm an OEM kinda person so I know I'll keep the bumpers and wheels. Also, IMO blind-spot monitoring and auto cruise control are incredible options. The ACC in traffic has been like magic. Sure you can slow down without realizing it, but then again shouldn't I be paying attention anyways? I love it, and it makes me even more of a defensive driver than I already was.

Gupton
Finally picked up my Gupton Baby last Friday, February 4! The Gupton experience was amazing - the price was exactly as we agreed and I was in and out pretty quickly. I got a full tank of gas in the process, which was an unexpected bonus. I could tell they actually took PDI seriously too, as a few miles (5) were added after delivery and all of my fuses were properly seated.

There she is! The blue 4xE went to a guy that sat next to us on the flight from Chicago, lol.

Gupton also apparently did the paperwork correctly - my window sticker had my name on it!

All in, I saved about 10K off of MSRP. Big win in today's market.

Road Trip
We drove to GA and back up to IL over last weekend, about 1,500 miles on the clock. All of it was incredible. I think a lot of complaints about the 3.6 are coming from people with higher expectations than me. Understandable both ways, but being a little unspoiled by the old Dodge is fine by me.

Took a nice detour on the way home. Weather in mid-south was windows-down incredible.

Once we got home I really started to appreciate just how much smaller this truck is. It's the perfect size. I've never been able to park in our garage and have access to both sides of both cars.

How I used to have to park, versus now

What's Next?
I've already ordered an ARE CX Classic for dog haulin' and camping purposes. I am also considering the AEV Dualsport RT lift, but honestly the ride height and Rubicon suspension stock is surprising me, so we'll see. I may just end up leveling out the front end after I get the ARE and see how the rear looks. Other things will likely just be cosmetic doodads for a while. Tazer will go in this weekend, and next will be some way to use that to set up an AppleTV or similar for the uConnect.

Thanks to everyone on the forum for all of the help and laughs so far! Really excited to see where all this JTR takes us. - 869 KPH.

Ah dude YOU were the other guy at Gupton. It was such a whirlwind, I wish I could have stayed and chatted with everyone. Nice write up, I really fell in love with my ACC on the drive home, added bonus was realizing that it also enables auto on/off high beams!

Well I reckon I'll start a list! This thing is so nice it's nuts.

Haha yeah, sorry I was way too hyped that AM. Probably took me a few days to get over the shock... nope, still not over it! Nice to hear someone else appreciates the ACC. Going to make road trips so much easier.

Ha I was geeking pretty hard myself, I thought everyone seemed normal and I was the weirdo.

The ARE topper is one of my favorite mods to date. They look great, especially on white!

I'm a little nervous just because all I have seen is it with color-matched hardtops, but I think it should still coordinate really well- we'll see!

I’ve seen a few in black with the black hardtop and I think it will compliment the white.

Nice looking Jeep, and even better selection of options.

I think the only thing I would have done different is to have gone with black fenders - but that's just a personal preference.

I can't wait to see how your build evolves!

Nice jeep! You've been on here since way before me, so I assumed you already had one! Congratulations! The Rubicon will let you really feel those chi-town potholes haha (my parents live in the Chicagoland area).

Thanks dude. I think I would have agreed with your fender choice if the JL/JT color-matched option was like the JK where the whole fender was matched. I like how I still get a little bit of a black plastic lip on these.

Ha yeah, analysis paralysis sometimes. I joined before I was ready to spend the $$ and am really thankful for all that I learned in the process. The JTR is soaking up potholes and crap roads like none other! The roads around here did make me seriously consider a Mojave though, lol.

03/04/2022 Updates!

I have a few weeks off of work coming up, so I'll finally have the time (and the warmer weather) to get some things done to the JT. I'm switching jobs and made sure to build in some time to reboot in between. Plan so far is:
  • Tint on front windows to match rear (pro install);
  • Xpel PPF on fenders and door handle surrounds (pro install);
  • Installing the RSE steps (I'll attempt);
  • Installing Teraflex leveling kit w/ new Mopar LCAs (I'll attempt);
I'm going with a spacer for now just because the lean is bothering me a little and I don't wanna go all in on an AEV kit yet. Feels like an OK compromise until it's time for new tires and can decide if I'm ready for it.

The ARE gets here in early April. I still have reservations about the color-match with my black hardtop, but I think I'll just get creative with some matte black vinyl wrap if I feel I need to. I think it might just need a little bit of a beltline at the bed or something, not sure yet.

Have lots of travel planned for the break too, but nothing major with the JT (yet). Lots of friends and family in far-flung places that I haven't seen in too long for too many stupid reasons. ? ?
