I didn’t get the max tow because I have nothing to tow. I just didn’t realize the payload capacity of passengers and all their stuff varies so much between models.
I don't have anything to tow either but payload capacity was my top priority when choosing a model gladiator to purchase.

Something to look at: GAWR (front and rear) and GVW vs. the payload listed on the tire decal. In my case, the tire decal has a line saying cargo, passengers, etc. should not exceed X pounds while GVW minus curb weight is significantly higher than X pounds. Therefore, I use GVW (considering axle loads in accordance with GAWR) minus curb weight for my actual legal load capacity.

I hear what you’re saying. But I’m not looking to load up the bed with a pallet of bricks. I’d just like to increase some capacity without rebuilding the entire jeep. Yours will always be more heavy duty than mine because you have the wider axles. if I can increase mine with some Bilstein 5100s and if needed some better springs without ruining my ride comfort then I’ll be happy.
I think you bought the wrong truck

Got my JT weighted today at the scrap yard. Empty with a full tank of diesel. 6,500 lbs. I was overweight with the scrap metal I took in.

It's been fine stock. For all these things. Even with my portly 250lbs hide (which counts towards that payload BTW), Ive been within limits legally and had no issues doing it.

The more options and features that go in the rig, the less payload it has. The less it can tow. But thats ok. I don't have things that I need it to.

In terms of upgrading, its important to figure out what components lower the rating.. As we all share 3.6's (except the glorious diesel brothers) we know that isnt it. Transmission? I think thats the same. Axles? We know that the max tow and rubis have different axles. The widened ones. So thats probably a factor.. But not a huge one..

But I know one thing for sure.. My Sahara has a pretty squishy ride. So i would look at the springs and suspension bits and compare them with the models that have higher GVWRs.

What I find amusing is if you add in the front axle capacity and rear on mine it 6,850lbs. According to jeeps US website the curb weight is 4,695. Which would leave 2,155lbs according to the napkin math

But the GVWR is 5800lbs. Take away the 4,650... thats still 1,150lbs.

I wonder what the discrepancy is? Im no engineer by a long shot, but I am curious.

Mine 2021 Overland diesel is 1228 lb. Why the new Sahara are much lower?

Great question. Theres probably a good reason for it. I mean the power seats, leather, carpet, floor mats, mudflaps and electronic gizmos all add weight.

They all come with painted hardtops, and the suspension is soft..

Mine have all options except for the smoker's group and Aux switch. Plus it's a 400 lb heavier diesel too. I can't imagine the 2 power seats weight that much more.

Me either! I would think the diesel would add a lot. Ill go to the scale tomorrow and see if they will weigh me. From what I understand the posted "Mopar curb weight" is as optimistic as I am before I stand on the scale.

Your ecodiesel has a higher GVWR than the OP's Sahara. Payload is nothing more than GVWR minus curb weight, so despite your truck likely having a higher curb weight there's still more leftover capacity to leave you with a higher payload.

It looks like your tire decal vs. GVW is similar to mine. The tire decal says "should not exceed..." so consider the GVW minus actual curb weight.

I have said this so many times. Gladiator is very capable. But it is a compromise vehicle. If you need real truck numbers, then Gladiator is probably not for you. If you wanted a Wrangler but also needed some extra cargo and towing capabilities of a truck, then welcome to Gladiator.
I have owned two, and they fit the bill nicely. My last being a Willys, and now the High Tide (The Sahara of 2025) based off the Sport S, yet upgrading to body color fenders and top, LED lighting, leather int with power seats, bed liner, running boards, mud terrain tires and tow package. The max payload says 951 lb max, yet I can tow 6k.
I looked at how I used my Colorado, and Silverado to come to a conclusion that I did not need a dedicated pickup. Bing able to go to Home Depot, or Lowes for things that just did not fit in say a Wrangler could be accomplished with the Gladiator. Our summer gear consists of beach chairs, umbrella, and foldable cart and cooler. All of which stay in the bed covered by a tonneau cover all summer long. Occupants consist of me, my wife, sometimes our youngest daughter, and our dog. I compared what I bought to a Sport S with Max Tow, and the price was the deciding factor. I knew the left over 25 Hightide could tow 6k by the factory installed tow hitch, and I did not care about payload.
So it really comes down to this. Think about how you use it, how much payload you would actually put in it, and decide if you have the right vehicle for you. Your situation is why I always say people need to stop comparing Gladiator to anything else. It is like nothing else. When you go at Gladiator it is important to decide if you can live with a Wrangler with a bed, and not how it stacks up against the competition. Because unless you get Max Tow, it doesn't. But let's see the competition remove their roof, and doors while folding their windshield.

You pretty much described exactly what I use the jeep for. Previously coming from a wrangler jk and Grand Cherokee. No plans on towing. All I was wondering is why the huge gap between JTs with 900 and 1700 pounds of payload and how can I increase mine a little in case I want to load up more than what I have.

At this point, its just like Jeep and their towing capacities as far as I am concerned. Jeep is just pulling it out their arse.

Sumo springs, air bag assist, or higher rate coils will all help, along with some stronger shocks to help keep it in control. A few people will argue you to death that you'll destroy your truck and kill everyone around you - but if your talking about keeping the truck from squatting as bad all while hovering around the GVWR, I see no problems.
