That's the problem, lugging. The PentaStar is built to run, it like revs, look at a dyno chart. If you need power (climbing while towing) then you are most efficient at the torque peak which means you need to spin.Temps were in the low 80's, but altitude wasn't much in the Appalachains, under 4,000 feet. I do tend to shift manually just to prevent the engine racing. It doesn't seem to hunt, it just doesn't shift early enough for my taste. I don't think it needs to be in the 4500-5000 RPM range to keep power.
A gear lower will increase fuel economy and lower your temps ironically. That there are versions of this engine making substantially more power from the factory emphasizes how under stressed it is. There is no harm whatsoever in running at 4,500 RPM for a considerable amount of time. In fact you'll have cleaner valves, less carbon accumulation in the oil, less crankcase pressure and less strain on your driveline.
