OK, so here are the particulars:
> Ordered my JT on 9/19/20
> Just arrived at the dealership 12/17/20, which is 89 days after ordering.

Missouri allows assessment of personal property tax on vehicles, and I've calculated that my 2021 personal property tax for the JT would be ~$660, or roughly $500 more than what I'll pay for my 2011 Ram. I've told the dealership that I'll be there on Saturday, January 2nd to take delivery. For waiting those two weeks, I'll save $500 in tax (that admittedly wouldn't actually be paid until December, 2021), since I won't own it on January 1st... which is what triggers the tax for that year. My first tax bill on the JT wouldn't be due until December, 2022.

Am I nuts for waiting to take delivery, after waiting this long for it to arrive? Would you pay $500 in additional taxes for only two weeks with your JT?

(In case you're wondering, the Employee Pricing For All promotion ends on 1/4/2021, so I'm good on that front.)

I wouldn't pay an extra $500 if it only meant a 2-week wait. Think of it as a lease/loan, and it gets more clear. You wouldn't pay $1,000 a month for a Gladiator, would you?

"Assessment of personal property tax on vehicles"? Is this above and beyond the VLT fees you're paying? That's nuts! Eff that...

The dealer will probably knock another $500 of the price if you take it in 2020

Thanks for the replies.

Santa has never brought me something as nice as a JT before, so there's not much chance of doubling up. For the foreseeable future, he had better start boning up on accessories though.

Missouri does charge Sales Taxes on vehicle purchases, as well as the personal property tax. Our county's real estate taxes are semi-reasonable, and Missouri's income tax rate is less than some other states', so it probably evens out overall -- and gas is $1.80/gal currently due to low fuel taxes. Thankfully, I'll pay less than full sales tax due to trading in the '11 Ram and the recent sale of my '80 CJ-7... both of which are offset against the JT's sale price.

I did throw out the option of keeping the JT sale in 2020 if my tax "penalty" went away, but the salesman didn't take the bait.

I'm in construction (considered "essential"), and can't usually work from home. It hasn't slowed down much for me thus far - quite a blessing, I know.

Is the dealer ok with it since it’s taking there space
They seem to be OK with it, at least from what I can tell. I've bought several vehicles from this salesman going back almost 15 years now, so there's a relationship in place already. They basically had their choice of absorbing my tax hit, or a 1/2/21 delivery. We both chose to wait.

I think that's the right / responsible move; and as Renegade pointed out, that 2 weeks extrapolates to $1,000 per month (or $12,000 per year, to carry the analogy further).

Wait, well worth it. I waited a week on mine, custom order as well due to not having the loan negotiated with the dealer. Didn't want to rush out there until that was fully figured out just to make sure I didn't need to bring my own.

Sounds worth it to me, just make sure the dealer isn't using it for parts runs, demo drives, etc....... Tell him $1000 discount for every 100 miles you find on it at delivery.

I had the salesman send me a photo of the odometer. 14 miles, after their PDI test drive. It had BETTER have about that many in 2 weeks except for a run to the gas station. They knows me too well though.

I like the look, except for the all-season tires. That was a mistake.

If you were planning on itemizing this year and taking the sales tax deduction this year... you will have to wait for that.

I would say if they don't mind it being there, you trust them not to sell it, and you can stand it then wait. I am for anything that helps someone pay less in taxes.
