goes without saying, periodically check every thing edible , wiring, hoses. And, add mules to the list of critters that like wiper blades
I saw a test on youtube where a person tested peppermint oil - instead of going after the food as usual, the mice caught a whiff and turned and left the area.

I put small balls of cotton next to the PDC and other areas in my WJ where I had seen evidence of mice chewing and crapping and dropped peppermint oil on the cotton ball - no more mice under the hood. I placed that in the areas I figured the mice used to access the upper engine bay area and had no more damage.

Looks like squirrel teeth. Did the same to the plastic base of my daughter's basketball net. You could trap and relocate but a local exterminator said they are very territorial. If you relocate them to an area occupied by other squirrels, the existing squirrels will kill the new transplants. He said the more humane thing to do is to capture and kill them.
That's not my problem. The squirrels need to adapt to the hood. 🤷🏽‍♂️

At least they have a fighting chance. lol

Anyhow, they're probably attracted to whatever wax or cleaner you are using. I'm willing to guess the wax has some kind of tasty ingredient. Carnauba Wax is edible. If it's similar to the kind they use in food... 🤷🏽‍♂️

Just place a camera aimed at the hood to see what comes to chew on the latches.

Squirrels.....just went through this on my JT. Latches, cowl, etc. Had to replace tons of plastics. They never touched my wife's JK.

We have a park up here by the Susquehanna river. Vultures by the parking lot will mob your vehicle and eat the wiper blades and rubber around the glass. It's crazy to see. There are tons of them and they will fug your vehicle up in no time.

So I was waxing my Jeep today and discovered that my hood latches were trashed. Everything else surrounding the hood and front fender flares flawless. Any ideas? Pics attached showing the condition of the latches.

I have more than 30 years experience as a forensic specialist. During that time I had opportunity to be trained by some of the best tool mark experts in America including those from the DOJ and the FBI. Indiscriminate defects such is seen here are not a sign of prying with a tool; it is however, an indication of vermin attempting to eat at plastic, not so much as a food source but as a source for sharpening their teeth and gaining material for nest building.

Yuuup - exactly as said a couple pages back. Rodents gnawing not for food, but to keep their teeth in shape.

Amazing what I've found in the nests of mice and chipmunks. Everything from dryer sheets to wire insulation to foam from car seats, shreds of carpet, whatever they could gnaw on.

The damn birds messed up my JL a few years ago because of a nest under the front deck steps that was too close to where I parked it. I never had a problem with chipmunks other then them pooping on my tires.
